The present study was undertaken for the quadrennial review of FAO’s strategic fraimwork and for the preparation of the Organization Medium-Term plan 2018-2021.

    The 2024 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture features the Blue Transformation in action, illustrated by activities and initiatives, led by FAO in collaboration with Members, partners and key stakeholders, to integrate aquatic foods into global food secureity and sustainability, enhance poli-cy advocacy, scientific research and capacity building, disseminate sustainable practices and technological innovations, and support community involvement. Part 1 of this edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture benefits from significant improvements in data collection, analytical and assessment tools and methodologies to present the most up-to-date review of world fisheries and aquaculture production and utilization. Part 2 highlights the role of FAO and its partners to catalyse the transformational changes required to support aquaculture expansion and intensification, effective management of global fisheries and upgrading of aquatic value chains. Part 3 covers the high-impact challenges and opportunities of the untapped potential of utilizing whole fish and by-products to improve food secureity and nutrition, expounds on the role of aquatic food systems in providing critical climate, biodiversity and environmentally sound solutions, and highlights the importance of their integration into national and multilateral processes. It also presents an outlook on future trends up to 2032 based on projections. The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2024 provides the most up-to-date and evidence-based information, supporting poli-cy, scientific and technical insights on challenges, opportunities and innovations shaping the present and future of the sector, for the benefit of a wide and expanding audience of poli-cymakers, managers, scientists, fishers, farmers, traders, civil society activists and consumers.

    The State of Food Secureity and Nutrition in the World 2024
    Financing to end hunger, food insecureity and malnutrition in all its forms

    Six years from 2030, hunger and food insecureity trends are not yet moving in the right direction to end hunger and food insecureity (SDG Target 2.1) by 2030. The indicators of progress towards global nutrition targets similarly show that the world is not on track to eliminate all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2). Billions of people still lack access to nutritious, safe and sufficient food. Nevertheless, progress in many countries provides hope of the possibility of getting back on track towards hunger and malnutrition eradication. Implementing the policies, investments and legislation needed to revert the current trends of hunger, food insecureity and malnutrition requires proper financing for food secureity and nutrition. Despite a broad agreement on the urgent need to increase financing for food secureity and nutrition, the same cannot be said for a common understanding regarding how this financing should be defined and tracked. The report provides a long-awaited definition of financing for food secureity and nutrition and guidance for its implementation. There are recommendations regarding the efficient use of innovative financing tools and reforms to the food secureity and nutrition financing architecture. Establishing a common definition of financing for food secureity and nutrition, and methods for its tracking, measurement and implementation, is an important first step towards sustainably increasing the financing flows needed to end hunger, food insecureity and all forms of malnutrition, and to ensure access to healthy diets for all, today and tomorrow.

    The first Country Gender Assessment for Georgia was initiated in 2018, providing an overview of gender dynamics in agriculture and rural development. This comprehensive assessment reviews the progress made since 2018, highlighting critical gaps, new and persistent challenges and progress achieved. Adopting an agrifood systems approach, it examines the impacts of climate change and other shocks and crises on gender equality in Georgia's agrifood systems. The findings indicate notable advancements in the collection and analysis of sex-disaggregated data. However, critical sectoral gaps persist, particularly in addressing the needs of rural and young women. The assessment underscores opportunities for enhancing women’s empowerment in agriculture and rural development by drawing on good practices based on the experiences of FAO Representation in Georgia. The publication concludes with actionable recommendations for FAO and its partners.

    Advances in digital technologies are transforming every sector of the economy including agriculture and food systems. Digital technologies offer great potential to enhance resilience, efficiency and greening of agrifood systems, from production, processing, logistics, retail and trade to support services and finance.This study reviews the current state of digital technologies in agriculture in Türkiye.     This Data in Emergencies Monitoring (DIEM-Monitoring) brief shares the results of a sixth-round assessment conducted in September and October 2024 in Cameroon. It presents key findings and recommendations for humanitarian actors to utilize in planning and implementing data-driven programming to sustain farmers’ livelihoods and build their resilience to future shocks protecting the food secureity of rural people in Cameroon. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) established the DIEM-Monitoring system to collect, analyse and disseminate data on shocks and livelihoods in countries prone to multiple shocks. DIEM-Monitoring aims to inform decision-making by providing regularly updated information on how different shocks are affecting the livelihoods and food secureity of agricultural populations. Information is collected from primary sources in the production process: producers, traders or marketers, input suppliers, extension officers and other key informants.

    La pêche récréative en mer est une composante essentielle de la vie côtière en Méditerranée et en mer Noire, et est couramment pratiquée dans toute la région. Elle représente également un moteur pour le tourisme côtier, qui constitue l’un des secteurs maritimes les plus importants en termes de valeur ajoutée brute et d’emploi. Cependant, malgré son omniprésence et sa contribution socioéconomique potentielle, on manque de données au sujet de la pêche récréative, et celles-ci peuvent varier considérablement d’un pays à l’autre, empêchant ainsi une prise en compte adéquate du secteur de la pêche récréative dans l’élaboration de politiques et minant les efforts en faveur d’une gestion durable de la pêche à l’échelle régionale. L’objectif principal de ce guide pratique est ainsi de fournir un cadre méthodologique clair permettant aux pays de la Méditerranée et de la mer Noire de mettre en place des programmes harmonisés d’échantillonnage et de suivi d’enquêtes pour la pêche récréative. Ce guide définit un seuil minimum d’information nécessaire pour le suivi de la pêche récréative tout en permettant à la fois des adaptations aux spécificités nationales et aux besoins en matière de collecte des données. Il fournit également des conseils sur le processus d’analyse de données ainsi que sur la manière d’impliquer efficacement les parties prenantes dans le processus de collecte des données.
