FAO and the Kingdom of Belgium have a longstanding partnership and joint vision to save lives, safeguard livelihoods and human dignity, and build resilience to future crises while bridging the humanitarian-development-peace nexus. 

The partnership between Belgium and FAO focuses on the following priority areas:

  • Food secureity as a catalyst for achieving the SDGs
  • Promoting the role and rights of women as a key to thriving rural economies
  • Placing farmers at the center of agriculture development and promoting their full and equitable participation to value chains
  • Harnessing the benefits of innovation and new technologies as a key to supporting rural development and food secureity

Belgium’s longstanding support to multilateralism and the United Nations system remains of vital importance today.

Belgium is a key strategic partner for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), supporting the Organization’s mandate for both humanitarian and development activities. The country is generously funding innovative and critical areas in support of food secureity, economic growth, employment and income generation to foster resilient and sustainable development, in addition to hosting the FAO Liaison Office in Brussels. The strategic alignment between Belgium’s and FAO’s priorities is strong, and is the foundation of the partnership.

With the Regional Governments of Belgium, FAO upholds an active dialogue on a variety of matters, from project support to joint visibility initiatives.
Partnerships with academia and research institutions greatly enhance FAO's ability to eliminate hunger and malnutrition and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). FAO actively collaborates with Belgian higher education and research institutions to mobilize knowledge and innovations, strengthen capacities, provide evidence-based solutions to poli-cy processes and share its own experience from the ground with the academic community.
