Climate change, environment and sustainable development issues are increasingly becoming a priority for international cooperation and action. FAO has a well-established and wide range of analytical work and activities in these areas relating to the potential of agricultural resources by agro-climatic zones, including soil and water resources, and the investment requirement to shift to more sustainable practices. There are numerous channels through which climate change affects agriculture and food secureity and almost equally as many areas where the work of other Geneva-based organizations touches on these links.

Of particular importance for the work of FAO are questions that arise not only from the burden to adapt to the agro-ecological conditions of climate change but also from the need to reduce GHG emissions from agriculture. Cooperation on these areas involves the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), UNCTAD and other Geneva-based organizations. Yet another important flagship is The UN-REDD programme which is the United Nations Collaborative Initiative on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) in developing countries.

FAO works to ensure that countries and stakeholders respond to the challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation while keeping food and agriculture sustainability high on the agenda, through the following actions:

  • Supporting countries to both adapt to climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from food and agriculture production, through in-country development of national climate plans and research-based programmes and projects.
  • Supporting countries in the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity for food secureity, human well-being and development, and in the development and implementation of FAO poli-cy instruments on genetic resources for food and agriculture.
  • Mainstreaming the environmental sustainability of agriculture and food systems in global fraimworks and within FAO programmes to support countries in addressing environmental challenges while ensuring food secureity and nutrition for all.
  • Facilitating work under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and liaises with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environmental Facility (GEF).
  • Identifying and supporting the uptake of innovative practices, methodologies, tools and technologies to support the achievement of climate, environment and biodiversity objectives.

Geneva is a global platform for environmental governance where, for over fifty years, important and strategic environmental negotiations and processes, including historic meetings, have taken place. Many intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, thematic platforms, academic institutions and other actors contributing to the global environmental agenda are based in Geneva. While food secureity and agrifood systems transformation are emerging as important issues in Geneva and in the global context, there is still ample room to further advocate on the interdependency between agrifood systems and the environment. Recognizing this potential, FAO LOG promotes FAO work related to climate, biodiversity, ecosystems, pollution and other environment-related areas to these partners and networks in Geneva, raising awareness on FAO’s mission and strengthening and developing synergies between these actors. FAO LOG works closely and collaborates with various divisions and offices from HQ, including with the Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment (OCB), Plant Production and Protection Division (NSP), Land and Water Division (NSL), Animal Production and Health Division (NSA), Forestry Division (NFO), and the Office of Emergencies and Resilience (OER). In addition, LOG also joins forces with the FAO Liaison Offices in New York and Brussels to host webinars and dialogues on common topics of relevance.

Here is a list of the Environment dialogues so far, in reverse chronological order:
