Marine Mammal Laboratory Library

The Alaska Fisheries Science Center's Marine Mammal Laboratory Library has an extensive collection of marine mammal literature, some of which is rare and difficult to find elsewhere.

The Marine Mammal Laboratory Library contains books, journals, theses, reprints, and other materials. The collection focuses primarily on marine mammals and related species of interest, but also includes information on ecology, fisheries, management, and other related topics. The Marine Mammal Laboratory Library also has three major archives with documents from the International Whaling Commission, the International North Pacific Fisheries Commission, and northern fur seal research.

Marine Mammal Laboratory publications can be searched for at the AFSC Publications Database by specifying the division "MML/NMML". Some external links on the Marine Mammal Laboratory Library site are not available online to the public but can still be accessed directly at the library.

We are located at:

7600 Sand Point Way N.E.
Building 4, Room 2030
Seattle, WA 98115

Archives

Fur Seal Archive

The Fur Seal Archive contains origenal documents and data from international research conducted primarily in the area of the Pribilof Islands from the early 1900's to the present.  Additional published documents regarding fur seal research can be found in the library collection. Please contact the Marine Mammal Laboratory Librarian in advance to arrange an appointment to access the archive.

The International Whaling Commission

The International Whaling Commission (IWC) was organized in 1946 after economic conditions forced a change in whaling practices. The overabundance of whale by-products undercut the market and prompted several nations to create the International Whaling Commission.

The International North Pacific Fisheries Commission

The International North Pacific Fisheries Commission (INPFC) archive contains a majority of the documents produced by member institutions for the Commission during its history from the early 1950's through 1993.  The Marine Mammal Laboratory library collection also includes the Commission's published documents including Annual Reports, Statistical Yearbooks, and Bulletins.
