John Buchanan
Background
John joined FRAM in 2004 as a member of the survey team. Before that, he worked in the Hawaii Longline Observer Program for 8 years, and as a groundfish observer in Alaska for two and a half years. He earned a A.A. from Mira Costa College and a B.S. in Aquatic Biology from UC Santa Barbara. John spends the field season working aboard chartered commercial fishing vessels. He conducts West Coast groundfish surveys as a deck biologist and chief scientist.
Current Research
John spends most of the off season working up samples from the groundfish survey and getting ready for the next year's survey. Currently, he is working on a rockfish diet manuscript and maturity studies, cestode parasites in hake and rockfish, and the abundance/distribution of Chionoecetes Tanner crabs. He is a NOAA diver, serving as dive support for the chartered survey vessels, and managing the Newport Research Station's dive locker located at Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center.
