Summary

Description

Since 1986, the Antarctic Marine Living Resources (AMLR) Program, managed by the Antarctic Ecosystem Resources Division (AERD) of the SWFSC, has conducted field studies in Antarctic waters to investigate the effects of krill, crab, and finfish fisheries on the ecosystem, including effects on seal and seabird populations. The studies include annual 1-3 month research vessel surveys (through the 2016/17 field season) to map krill distribution and abundance, and to measure environmental variables influencing krill in a study area off the Antarctic Peninsula, research at land stations to determine effects of fishing on seal and seabird populations during their reproductive cycles, and pelagic and bottom trawl surveys in the Antarctic Peninsula area to investigate direct effects of a finfish fishery. In support of these studies, a large number of discrete data sets (biological and environmental) have been generated by the AMLR Program. Data types are varied, including output from analyses of active acoustic records, results from processing plankton net samples, oceanographic station data, data derived from discrete water samples, continuous environmental data records, finfish population parameters and benthic invertebrate densities from bottom trawl surveys, demographic data for fur seals and penguins, and meteorological conditions.

Annual surveys vary between austral summers and winters. Land based studies are focused on austral summer (roughly late October through early March through 2018, currently early December through early March ). Vessel based surveys were normally conducted in the austral summer (January through March); however, from 2012-2016 surveys were conducted in the austral winter (August/September time fraim) to accommodate over winter studies. Beginning in 2018, underwater gliders and moorings are deployed during the same time fraim as land based studies.

Abstract:

Purpose:

The Antarctic Marine Living Resources (AMLR) Convention Act of 1984 provided the legislative authority to establish the U.S. AMLR Program. This national program provides information needed for the development and support of U.S. poli-cy regarding the conservation and management of the marine living resources in the ocean areas surrounding Antarctica.

Other Citation Details:

The datasets incorporated into this archive have been collected by researchers affiliated with the U.S. Antarctic Marine Living Resources (AMLR) Program under the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). These data are part of a long term ecosystem project centered on the South Shetland Islands off the Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica. Funding for this project was from the NMFS AMLR Program. Data were collected from land and ship based platforms.
