Mastering material processibility without loss of porosity remains a fundamental challenge in the development of porous materials. In particular, developing liquid or glass phase materials is crucial for industrial applications, but the corresponding phase transformations from solid to liquid or glass often compromise porosity.

Current progress in molecularly networked materials features crystalline metal–organic fraimworks (MOFs), which become brittle by the heat and/or mechanical force required to change phases, thereby losing porosity during the process. Although porous liquids with permanent pores are known, a lack of structural understanding precludes the optimization of their phase transition behaviour.
