With the rise of powerful computers came the rise of the smart city. The concept generally describes the use of (big) data and (digital) technology to build better urban environments. It is mostly guided by goals of technological progress and capitalist efficiency, and an exclusively human focus. In Designing More-than-Human Smart Cities, editors Sara Heitlinger, Marcus Foth and Rachel Clarke challenge this notion and considerably widen the scope of urban ‘smartness’ by combining it with the idea of the ‘more-than-human’. More-than-human is a term introduced by David Abram in 1996 that aims to include nonhumans in social, ethical and other thought and decision-making processes that have previously only featured humans1.
