Woman charged after 13-month-old was left in hot car this summer
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WAND) — A Normal woman has been arrested and charged after police said her 13-month-old daughter died after being left in a hot car this summer.
On Wednesday, Bloomington Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division issued an arrest warrant for 24-year-old Quvonnay Collins.
The warrant stemmed from the death of her child in August. On August 25, police officers were called to Carle Bromenn Medical Center, for a death investigation.
Police learned the child who had died, a 13-month-old girl, had been brought to the hospital by her mother, Collins.
The child arrived with no signs of life. She was pronounced dead and an autopsy was conducted.
The McLean County Coroner's Office said preliminary autopsy results showed the child died from hyperthermia due to heat exposure. During the investigation, detectives learned the child was left unattended in a car, for an extended period of time.
On December 19, Collins was taken into custody by the Bloomington Police Department Criminal Investigations Division, Street Crimes Unit, and the United States Marshals Service. She is being held at the McLean County Detention Facility. A detention hearing is scheduled for December 20.
She is charged with involuntary manslaughter/family member, obstructing justice/destroy evidence, endangering the life and health of a child involving death.
"The circumstances surrounding the death of the 13-month-old child was very unfortunate. The men and women of the BPD worked through this investigation with diligence. I am proud of their efforts and the assistance of our community," said Bloomington Police Chief Jamal Simington. "These types of cases take considerable effort and expertise. This community is truly blessed to have highly trained, dedicated, and experienced professionals to investigate these incidents."
