Here's a tip for patching a hole in drywall: Start by using a drywall saw to cut a square around the hole. Get an extra piece of drywall and cut a patch 2 inches larger than the hole on all sides. Turn the patch over and score four lines, snap it, and peel off the gypsum core. What you're left with is a square of drywall attached to the center of the paper.
