Richmond California is best known for its unique history and role in the WWII home front effort. Shipyards in Richmond sprang up along the waterfront, building 747 Liberty Cargo Ships for the war. This was more ships being produced than any other shipyard in the country, making Richmond a huge role in the war effort! Once the war ended there was no more need to build military cargo ships.
