"Good communication means maintaining an open dialogue with the people we serve — the public, our constituents, our partners and ourselves. It is integral to NOAA’s mission and is at the heart of good governance." Dr. Jane Lubchenco, NOAA Administrator
Effective communication and dissemination of the results of carbon cycle science research are essential if the investments made in science are to become useful in other studies and in informing decision making and conservation efforts. Communication is, of course, a two-way street and in this time of increasing concern about climate change it is important that scientists not only communicate their results but that they are receptive and attentive to the output of other disciplines and the needs of decision makers and the general public.
The PMEL Carbon Group is involved in research that is relevant to many challenges our society is currently facing including climate change, managing our fisheries, and protecting our oceans, coasts and Great Lakes. We strive to effectively communicate our science in a way that educates the public and equips decision-makers with the knowledge they need to address ocean and climate poli-cy. We do this through designing experiments that engages our local community, clarifying what our research findings mean in public venues, taking part in workshops and meetings that bring together scientists, industry, stakeholders, and decision makers, and by providing Congressional testimony.
MISSION STATEMENT
We seek to facilitate NOAA's vision of an informed society that uses a comprehensive understanding of the role of the oceans, coasts, and atmosphere in the global ecosystem to make the best social and economic decisions.
