Rubio, son of Cuban immigrants, is expected to take an especially hard line on Cuba and might quickly attempt to reverse the terrorism designation.

The National Domestic Workers Alliance also put a call out for donations for such workers, “more than half of whom are Black, Latinx, and immigrant women.”

The bill is named for Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student who was murdered last year in Athens, Ga., by a Venezuelan immigrant who had entered the U.S. illegally in 2022.

It would also allow state attorneys general to sue to force the federal government to arrest and detain specific undocumented immigrants.

“There’s so much fear in the community, concern about this next administration — what may happen, what may not happen,” said the son of Guatemalan immigrants.
