A veil of wildfire smoke continued to linger over many Southern California communities Friday as conflagrations tore through the Santa Monica and San Gabriel mountains.

It lingers on shots of false eyelashes and foam rollers and slow-mo footage of Shelly posing on rooftops and street medians that grows increasingly ethereal and ridiculous.

Nearly everyone paused in their steps, some lingering for long moments.

The good news today is that the high-powered winds that in part led to the recent fires are now clearing air out and sending it toward the ocean, preventing pollution from lingering.

Through every incinerated block, reminders of the property owners’ affluence lingered: a home gym burned nearly beyond recognition, then a blackened hot tub, next the husks of multiple cars parked in a garage.
