WHAT IS DEEPENING AND FILLING
OF A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM?

METEOROLOGIST JEFF HABY

Low pressure systems develop, mature and then dissipate. When a low pressure system is developing or strengthening it will be referred to as a deepening system. When a low pressure system deepens, the central surface pressure will lower and/or the height minimums aloft associated with the low pressure will lower. It is rising air that causes surface pressure to lower and heights aloft to lower. Rising air cools. Since cooling air becomes more dense, the height surfaces aloft become more compact and thus the height surfaces lower closer to the earth's surface. The stronger the air rises, the lower the surface pressure and the lower the height surfaces aloft will become.

When a low pressure system is dissipating or weakening it will be referred to as a filling system. When a low pressure system fills, the central surface pressure will rise and/or the height minimums aloft associated with the low pressure will rise. When the rising motion decreases in the low pressure system, the system will start to fill.
