Allergy injections

Receiving allergy injections at UHS

Allergy injections are by appointment and are available Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Call 859-323-2778 (APPT) to schedule an appointment.

Orders should be faxed to UHS at 859-257-1055

  • If your allergy doctor requires an agreement to be signed with our medical director, please bring the form with you to your first appointment.
  • Our medical director will sign the form and fax it back to your allergy doctor.
  • You will be asked to sign a Release of Information annually so we may communicate with your allergy doctor.
  • All instructions from your allergy doctor must be in writing. Each vial must be clearly labeled and match the accompanying instructions with the following information: Your name, name of antigen, dilution, and expiration date. No telephone orders will be taken to adjust dosage.
  • We prefer that allergy extract and materials not be mailed to UHS. UHS is not responsible for mailed materials that are lost, unrefrigerated, or otherwise damaged. You are responsible for hand carrying allergy materials to UHS. However, UHS recognizes that some allergy doctors will not release extract directly to you, so your allergy doctor may mail them.
  • UHS does not mix or dilute any extracts; this must be done by the prescribing allergy doctor. We will store your extract in our allergy clinic.
  • Your initial injection(s) must be performed at the allergy doctor's office. If you have never received a dosage from your allergy doctor, you will be asked to return to your allergy office for the first injection.
  • When it is time to reorder vials, UHS may fax an order to your allergy doctor requesting new vials. Please notify the nurse if you have any special arrangements or circumstances regarding vial re-ordering.
  • Before each injection, the UHS nurse will assess you for reactions from previous injections, fever, shortness of breath and wheezing. If any of the above is present, you may be scheduled with a UHS clinician prior to the allergy injection.
  • You will be instructed to remain in the UHS designated area for 20 minutes after every allergy injection.
  • If there has been an extended interruption (more than 4 weeks) in your allergy therapy, you will be given a form with all pertinent information and asked to contact your allergy doctor's office to request new orders. Orders should be faxed to UHS at 859-257-1055. No injections will be given until written orders are received. You may need to reschedule your allergy appointment.
  • You are responsible for bringing written documentation of allergy injections received elsewhere including date, dosage, vial used, and appropriate signature.
  • If you plan to be away from school during holiday periods or at the end of the academic year, you are responsible for:
    • Making arrangements to receive your injections and obtain documentation of your injections while you are away.
    • Picking up your extract and records before leaving campus. We do not store unused or expired extract.  If an arrangement is not made for shipping or pick up it will be discarded.
    • Keeping the extracts refrigerated. Failure to do so may cause them to lose potency. We do not give syringes to patients to give their own injections
  • We will provide you with copies of your records for your convenience.
