Human rabies post-exposure prophylaxis workshop on supporting countries to build a case for investment: meeting report, Cape Town, South Africa, 23-26 September 2024

Overview

Following the United Against Rabies Forum meeting in Cape Town, representatives from countries considering applying to Gavi for human rabies PEP support were invited to a workshop to discuss the application process and requirements.

This offered an opportunity for countries to share their experiences and learn from each other, alongside meeting experts from a range of institutions working on rabies. The aims of the workshop were to develop a pipeline of future applicants for Gavi human rabies PEP and coordination mechanisms for support, identify future technical assistance requirements for application and roll out, understand National Immunisation Technical Advisory Group (NITAG) roles and collaboration with Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI).

Seven countries participated. During the workshop government representatives developed an action plan for the rest of 2024 and beyond, which they will be sharing with their colleagues on return. Both WHO and Gavi offered follow up support as country programmes evolve.

The most recent episode of the #RabiesToday podcast covers highlights of this workshop and the annual United Against Rabies forum meeting. Episode 5 “Don’t Wait Do Something” is available at the following link.
