Student Advisory Council

The Student Advisory Council (SAC) was established to enhance communication between students and the College. Council members are elected fall quarter to represent each MCC location. SAC also elects a student ex-officio to represent the Council at monthly MCC Board of Governors meetings.

SAC candidate applications are being accepted through October 11, 2024 for the Winter 24-25 quarter.

Requirements & Expectations

  • Receive two written recommendation from staff/faculty
  • Currently enrolled as a student in good standing for at least
  • six credit hours.
  • Minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
  • Not employed by MCC other than in a federal work-study capacity.
  • Remain enrolled for at least six credit hours during each quarter (excluding summer quarter) during the term of the Student Advisory Council.
  • Be a role model
  • Attend monthly meetings
  • Be available to represent fellow students.
  • Help with welcome week activities each quarter.

Student Ex-Officio Member of the Board of Governors

The student ex-officio serves on the MCC Board of Governors to enhance the flow of communication and information among students, the Board of Governors, and the college administration. This individual provides updates at the monthly board meetings regarding student interests and issues to the Student Advisory Council members.

The student ex-officio member of the Board of Governors is elected annually for a one-year term from among the members of the newly elected college-wide Student Advisory Council.

Expectations for Student Ex Officio Member of the Board of Governors (BOG)

  • The student ex-officio is elected by the Student Advisory Council to represent the student body.
  • An ex-officio member sits with the BOG to offer a report and participate in discussions of agenda items.
  • The student ex-officio must be able to attend the monthly Board of Governors meetings, which are normally held the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., as well as special meetings and retreats.

Student Ex Officio is a position that was created by the Board of Governors to enhance communication among students and the College. The Student Advisory Council is elected in early November, by campus students . The students who are elected by their peers serve as the Student Advisory Council from December until November.  The newly elected Student Advisory Council members then vote for a student amongst themselves to be the Student Ex Officio. The Student Ex Officio represents the MCC student body and serves a one-year term.

10401 Student Ex Officio Member of the Board of Governors

There shall be a Student Ex Officio Member of the Board of Governors, who shall be elected annually for a one-year term from among the members of the College Student Advisory Council. Each Campus and Center annually will elect a Campus Student Representative to serve for a one-year term on the College Student Advisory Council. The nomination and election process shall be in accordance with procedures prepared by the College’s Associate Vice President of Human Resources, approved by the Board of Governors, and found in Procedure Memorandum I-1.

The Student Ex Officio Member may request to attend up to one conference per year at College expense, if the conference is appropriate to the operation, governance, administration or other interests or purposes of the College, and shall be allowed to do so if the request is approved by the Chair of the Board.

The Student Ex Officio attends the Board of Governors’ monthly meetings and participates in discussions of agenda items. The Student Ex Officio communicates with the board regarding issues affecting students and updates the board about student life at MCC. The Student Ex Officio also interacts with the Faculty Ex Officio member who represents the MCC faculty.

The Student Ex Officio plays an important role on the Board of Governors and at MCC. The Student Ex Officio represents the student body while learning more about the College. The Student Ex Officio also communicates with the student organizations/clubs.

No. The Student Ex Officio is not an Ombudsperson. An Ombudsperson is someone who is appointed to investigate complaints. The Student Ex Officio does not investigate student complaints. The Student Ex Officio’s purpose is to be a student representative at the Board of Governors’ meetings. The Student Ex Officio updates the board about student life at MCC.

Students that have an academic issue may contact the appropriate academic dean. Students may contact the Dean of Student Advocacy and Accountability regarding complaints about non-academic issues.
