Australian soldiers wearing respirator gas masks during WWI. While under chlorine gas attacks, soldiers were instructed to urinate on their masks in order to more effectively combat the gas. However if for some reason they did not have a mask on hand, they were told to urinate on a piece of cloth and cover their face in it. Water also worked but was less effective. The First Battle of Passchendaele takes place in Belgium during WWI between Allied forces (Australia, New Zealand, and the UK) fighting against Germany. During the course of the battle Allied forces win the fighting, but overall gain very little ground. There are a total of 13,000 casualties; more than 2,700 of them being from New Zealand. This marks the largest loss of life in a single day in the nation’s history. October 12, 1917
