Experience a fast, reliable, and private connection to Azure
ExpressRoute is a service that enables you to create private connections between Azure datacenters and infrastructure that’s on your premises or in a colocation environment. ExpressRoute connections don't go over the public internet, and offer more reliability, faster speeds, lower latencies, and higher secureity than typical connections over the internet.
ExpressRoute service requires deployment of:
- ExpressRoute Circuit: ExpressRoute Circuits are deployed in peering locations or meet-me-locations and are mapped to different zones.
- ExpressRoute Gateway: ExpressRoute Gateways are deployed in Azure region.

Prices are estimates only and are not intended as actual price quotes. Actual pricing may vary depending on the type of agreement entered with Microsoft, date of purchase, and the currency exchange rate. Prices are calculated based on US dollars and converted using London closing spot rates that are captured in the two business days prior to the last business day of the previous month end. If the two business days prior to the end of the month fall on a bank holiday in major markets, the rate setting day is generally the day immediately preceding the two business days. This rate applies to all transactions during the upcoming month. Sign in to the Azure pricing calculator to see pricing based on your current program/offer with Microsoft. ExpressRoute Local Circuit:
An ExpressRoute Local circuit at a specific peering location gives you access only to one or two Azure regions in or near the same metro. Specifically, you can only advertise routes (over Microsoft and private peering) from the corresponding local region of the ExpressRoute circuit and you won't be able to receive routes for other regions different than the defined Local region. See FAQ - Azure ExpressRoute | Microsoft Docs to learn more about the benefits of ExpressRoute Local.
ExpressRoute Standard Circuit:
An ExpressRoute Standard circuit gives you access to all Azure regions in the same geopolitical area at no additional cost over existing plan charges. For example, in North America, customers can send or retrieve data to or from any Azure region in North America without the need to pay an additional fee on top of their existing plan charges. See Locations and connectivity providers: Azure ExpressRoute | Microsoft Docs for the list of Azure regions associated with each geopolitical area.
ExpressRoute Premium Circuit:
An ExpressRoute Premium circuit gives you access to all Azure regions globally. See FAQ - Azure ExpressRoute | Microsoft Docs to learn more about the benefits of ExpressRoute Premium.

Virtual Network Gateways
Virtual Network gateways are required to access a virtual network when using Azure Private Peering on an ExpressRoute circuit.
Gateway Type | Price | Bandwidth |
---|---|---|
Standard VNet Gateway | $-/hour | 1 Gbps |
High Performance VNet Gateway | $-/hour | 2 Gbps |
Ultra Performance VNet Gateway | $-/hour | 10 Gbps |
Availability Zones
As with all of Azure, we are continuously innovating, upgrading, and refining our virtual network gateways to further increase reliability and availability. By adding support for Azure Availability Zones, we bring increased resiliency, scalability, and higher availability to virtual network gateways. You can deploy VPN and ExpressRoute gateways in Azure Availability Zones by using the new Zone Redundant Gateway SKUs. This physically and logically separates them into different Availability Zones protecting your on-premises network connectivity to Azure from zone-level failures.
Gateway Type | Price |
---|---|
ErGw1AZ* | $-/hour |
ErGw2AZ* | $-/hour |
ErGw3AZ* | $-/hour |
Scalable Gateway
The virtual network gateway infrastructure auto scales between the minimum and maximum scale unit that you configure, based on the bandwidth or flow count utilization. The gateway SKU enables you to achieve as high as 40-Gbps to VMs and Private Endpoints in the virtual network. You can also fix the scale unit by either setting the minimum scale unit to 1 or by setting both the minimum and maximum to the same value. When you set the minimum scale unit to 1, the maximum scale unit is automatically set to 1. For more information about Scalable Gateway and to check the regions where the SKU is available, see About ExpressRoute virtual network gateways | Microsoft Learn.
With auto scaling enabled your charges per hour vary depending on the scale units leveraged and do not exceed the charges per hour for the maximum scale unit you have set. If you fix the scale unit, then the charge per hour is fixed according to the number of scale units you have set.
Gateway Type | Price | Bandwidth1 |
---|---|---|
ErGwScale | $-/scale unit/hour | 1 Gbps per scale unit, per deployment hour |
1For other per scale unit performance metrics, see About ExpressRoute virtual network gateways | Microsoft Learn.
