Hi! This indeed seems like a bug, however, as you stated, we made the game a few years ago, and it was for a game jam, so it's very unlikely that we'll fix it. Sorry for the inconvenience!
Easily one of my faves of the jam! If you decide to further expand on it I suggest changing the camera to a strictly top-down view instead of the slight tilt it has now. The viewing angle makes it very hard to accurately judge where you're actually hitting the ball towards.
