MOHAMMAD RAFIQUE MUGHAL – A biographical sketch
Professor (Dr.) Mohammad Rafique Mughal earned Ph.D. degree in Anthropology from the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania, USA. He specializes in archaeology of Pakistan and South Asia with focus on the Indus or Harappan Civilization, early Islamic archaeology of Sindh and International Heritage Management and Conservation. Since 1958, he has been with the erstwhile Federal Department of Archaeology and Museums in Pakistan where he held various administrative positions as head of Explorations and Excavations, Director of Northern Circle of Archaeology for conservation of monuments in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa before retiring as Director General of Archaeology and Museums in 1996. After retirement, he taught archaeology of South and Central Asia, Islamic archaeology, and international heritage management at Boston University for 16 years. Earlier, he was a Visiting Scholar at the Universities of Pennsylvania, Harvard, Berkeley and Cambridge; Adviser to the Government of Bahrain for archaeology, and until recently, Adviser for Heritage Studies at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Sahiwal.
He has also worked for international organizations such as ICOMOS, UNESCO and the World Bank as subject specialist, expert and delegate and collaborated with international teams on heritage preservation. While posted at Lahore for ten years, he was responsible for planning and initiating restoration and conservation of thirty monuments of the Islamic, Buddhist and Proto-historic periods. He undertook more than forty archaeological excavations and surveys of sites and monuments of various periods of history in Pakistan, Bahrain and Bangladesh. His research works, few co-authored, consist of books, book chapters and research papers which were published in Pakistan, England, France, Italy, Germany, U.S.A., Bahrain, Japan, Iran, China, Turkmenistan and India. He is recipient of Tamgha-i- Imtiaz in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the cultural heritage of Pakistan
