UK launches new undergraduate certificate in agricultural leadership

To meet the needs of tomorrow’s workforce, the UK Martin Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment (CAFE) is offering a certificate in agricultural leadership. Starting in Spring of 2025, the new certificate aims to create a pathway for students seeking to enter the agriculture industry by teaching transdisciplinary skills through leadership development and hands-on experiences.


This 12-credit hour certificate is open to all students and majors, focusing on creating well-rounded individuals for any industry. Students are required to complete three core courses in leadership foundations, experience and applications.

Innovation Update

Kentucky, Tennessee GAME Change secures commitments from key regional partners

Key businesses and organizations in Kentucky and Tennessee are showing their commitment to the University of Kentucky-led effort to create economic, societal and technological growth in the region through the creation of an innovation hub for the circular economy.


The work is part of the Generate Advanced Manufacturing Excellence for Change (GAME Change) project, which received one of the first-ever U.S. National Science Foundation’s Regional Innovation Engines, or NSF Engines, Development Awards in 2023.


NSF announced that 71 teams across the country, including the UK-led GAME Change, are advancing to the next stage of the NSF Engines proposal competition.

Construction Business Accelerator Opens Applications for

4th Cohort

Turner Construction Company and the University of Kentucky have opened applications for the fourth annual Construction Business Accelerator (CBA) cohort. The 10-week in-person training program, designed to equip underrepresented construction and related businesses with skills to compete in the industry, will be held in spring 2025. Applications are open until January 24.


The CBA offers participants access to networking opportunities with industry experts and training on essential construction business skills. The program, offered at no cost, concludes with a mock bid review and a graduation ceremony celebrating the participants’ accomplishments.

CEDIK Launches New Business Roadmap Platform to Support Kentucky Entrepreneurs

The Community and Economic Initiative of Kentucky (CEDIK) has launched a Business Roadmap Platform to help entrepreneurs start businesses across the state. The platform simplifies the startup process by providing all essential information in one location. Entrepreneurs can use the site’s Tableau dashboard to select their county or city and access a tailored list of required licenses, permits, and resources to establish a business.


The roadmap also connects users with local supporting partners to offer guidance and assistance throughout the process. By removing barriers and consolidating resources, CEDIK aims to foster economic growth and make business development more accessible in Kentucky.

Partnership Update

UK announces 2nd cohort of OneUK, the holistic business engagement program for strategic collaborators

The University of Kentucky is proud to announce the strategic collaboration with Bullard, Catalent and Fidelity Investments as the second cohort of OneUK.


OneUK provides a long-term, coordinated and holistic engagement experience between the university and select businesses through a mutual commitment to broaden and deepen their engagement with UK.


The second cohort consists of businesses with strong ties to Kentucky. Bullard is headquartered in Cynthiana, with an additional office in Lexington; Catalent’s flagship U.S. manufacturing location is in Winchester; and Fidelity operates in Covington with satellite offices across the state.

Landon Borders is the Senior Associate Director for Innovation Economic Development and Industry Partnerships at UK Innovate and the Executive Director of Innovation Connect. He leads efforts to support corporate research and development partnerships, as well as to advance innovation economic development in alignment with Kentucky’s priority industries and the University of Kentucky’s research focus areas. Landon is also the Director of the Estate Whiskey Alliance®, a global consortium dedicated to discovering, advancing and promoting the virtues of estate-produced whiskey. Additionally, he is a OneUK Core Team member, supporting innovation initiatives with partner companies.

 

With over twenty years of experience, Landon has been a driving force in developing new products and technologies that have made a lasting impact on Kentucky’s industries. He previously served as the Director of Product Development at Bullard, where he oversaw the global patent portfolio, technology development and new product introductions. Landon led multi-disciplinary design and engineering teams worldwide. Prior to Bullard, he worked at Big Ass Fans and Lexmark International, where he developed and commercialized internet-connected devices, software solutions and imaging systems in various roles.

 

Landon has served on the Advisory Board for Launch Blue and as a Board Director for the Thread Group, The Connected Lighting Alliance and JSRDF. He is a proud graduate of the University of Kentucky, holding a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
