References:

Mostly from Richard Sears' Chinese Etymology site (authorisation),
which in turn draws data from various collections of ancient forms of Chinese characters, including:

  • Shuowen Jiezi (small seal),
  • Jinwen Bian (bronze inscriptions),
  • Liushutong (Liushutong characters) and
  • Yinxu Jiaguwen Bian (oracle bone script).

In oracle bone and bronze inscriptions, pictogram (象形) : a granary, depicting its roof (), a door (), and a pit for storing grain (). Alternatively an ideogrammic compound (會意 / 会意) : (gather) + (door) – a warehouse. The component corrupted into 𠁣 in Qin bamboo slips. This form was inherited in small seal script and was misinterpreted as cognate with the unrelated in the Shuowen Jiezi.
