珠崖

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Chinese

[edit]
pearl; bead precipice
simp. and trad.
(珠崖)
alternative forms 朱崖
Literally: “Pearl Cliff”.

Etymology

[edit]

Traditionally thought to be named for the pearls produced on the seaside cliffs in the area. However, the first syllable (zhū) appears to be a Kra-Dai prefix in toponyms. Compare 朱盧朱卢 (“a county under Hepu commandery during the Han dynasty”), 珠官 (“a county under Zhuya commandery in Eastern Wu”) and 朱豐朱丰 (“a county under Hepu commandery during the Southern Qi”).
