[edit]Probably from archaic Chiwere Ñí Brásge, pronounced [ˌɲĩˈbɾaskɛ] (contemporary Chiwere Ñí Bráhge), or the Omaha-Ponca Ní Btháska, pronounced [ˌnĩˈbˡðaska], both meaning "flat water," after the Platte River that flows through the state.
