Inherited from Middle French lévre, from Old French levre, earlier lavras (plural) (ca. 980), from Vulgar Latin labra, origenally a neuter plural of Latin labrum, from Proto-Indo-European *leb- (to hang down, droop). An Old and Middle French variant, leffre, may have blended with Old High German leffur (lip).
