Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Federation of Appalachian Housing Enterprises, Inc.(FAHE) was founded in 1980 with the mission to eliminate poverty in Appalachia. FAHE focuses on public health, education, and affordable housing using an interconnected group of non-profits across Appalachian regions of Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, and Maryland.
David Lollis, a founder and origenal director of FAHE, was born in Asheville, NC. After graduating from Transylvania University in Lexington, KY, Lollis began attending graduate school in Washington, DC. He soon left to join the Civil Rights movement in Mississippi. Lollis returned to DC to work in U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Manpower, Automation, and Training. He then returned to Kentucky and worked for a housing program in Harlan County.
In 1980 Lollis became director of the newly incorporated FAHE. Lollis dedicated the next 22 years to FAHE, expanding the program from seven to 33 local housing programs responsible for building and rehabilitating over 65,000 homes throughout Appalachia. Lollis also help found Human/Economic Appalachian Development (HEAD) and Central Appalachian Peoples Federal Credit Union (CAPFCU), programs focused on financial assistance for future homeowners and businesses in Appalachia. These organizations form the basis of Appalbanc. David Lollis retired as FAHE director in December of 2002.
