Empower Farmers to

Build Resilience to Climate Change

See how we bring digital advice to farmers globally

Our Story

Our team has been working with smallholder farmers in developing countries for over a decade. We have personally met with hundreds of farmers who are increasingly suffering from the negative effects of climate change and are struggling to access easy-to-use and personalised information on how best to cope and adapt.

We are frustrated with the short project cycles in international development and weary of a growing over-reliance of those in need of donor funding.

Our aim was to harness the power of the private sector, technology and ingenuity of farmers to access information directly through their smartphones. To empower them to make informed decisions and choices on how to adapt and strengthen their own resilience to climate change.

So in 2019 we created farmbetter - a mobile app that uses a farmer’s location, situation and farming goals to put tailored and actionable know-how directly in the hands of the farmer.

News

farmbetter was selected as one of the Resilient Agriculture Innovations for Nature (RAIN) Challenge Round 2 winners!

farmbetter is pleased to announce we have been selected as one of the RAIN Challenge winners! Over the next few months, we’ll collaborate with the Global Resilience Partnership and Shockwave to scale our project, Empowering Smallholders: Scaling Sustainable Farming and Market Access in Central Kenya.
The award includes tailored mentorship, leadership support, and collaboration opportunities, in addition to a $15,000 grant to scale. This support will enable us to build a sustainable ecosystem that uplifts farmers economically while ensuring long-term environmental sustainability.

farmbetter starts a new project with SWISSAID!

We are collaborating with SWISSAID in Colombia and Ecuador on a 1.5 year project to use the farmbetter app within their AeD-Labs project. AeD-LABs is a pilot project working to collect and share farmers’ and food systems stakeholders’ agroecological innovations for climate change adaptation. Farmbetter’s technology facilitates this exchange of adaptation solutions, which support farming communities facing related challenges in similar contexts or ecosystems. The farmbetter app matches the unique farmer profile with peer-reviewed sustainable land management practices from the World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies’ global database. Through this project, farmbetter will reach 800 farmers in Colombia and Ecuador with sustainable farming practices, and can disseminate the collected AeD-LABs adaptation solutions to a wider audience.

Our Network

farmbetter has a strategic partnership with the World Overview of Conservation

Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT). We incorporate best practices from WOCAT in our app to give farmers access to over 1,000 peer-reviewed solutions on sustainable land management.

farmbetter was rated as 233 on the 2019 FoodTech 500 - the world’s first definitive list of the global entrepreneurial talent at the intersection between food, technology, and sustainability - and was nominated for the Curt Bergfors Food Planet Prize and featured by the editors.

farmbetter has also successfully applied and received seed funding and support from:

farmbetter is currently involved in four projects supporting small-scale farmers in nine countries - Ecuador, Colombia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burkina Faso, India and Nepal.
