IMPACTS Visualized by the Field Campaign Explorer (FCX)

The Investigation of Microphysics and Precipitation for Atlantic Coast-Threatening Snowstorms (IMPACTS) flew a complementary suite of remote sensing and in-situ instruments for three 6-week deployments (2020-2023) on NASA’s ER-2 high-altitude aircraft and P-3 cloud-sampling aircraft. Lightning Dashboard

The Lightning Dashboard, currently as a minimum viable product (MVP) release, has been designed to provide visualization of lightning datasets as well as integrating basic analysis capabilities. The initial design is derived from NASA’s COVID-19 dashboard, highlighting NASA’s focus on open science.

TRMM LIS Very High Resolution Gridded Climatology Collection

The TRMM LIS 0.1 Degree Very High Resolution Gridded Climatology data collection consists of a set of gridded climatologies constructed from individual observations made by the Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite.

Water Makes the World

Water in the atmosphere is primarily found in the gaseous phase but can also be present as droplets, ice crystals, rain, and hail that can be found in clouds. These particles can be photographed with probes installed on research aircraft. During the Mid-latitude Continental Convective Clouds Experiment (MC3E) field experiment, images were taken by microphysical probes installed on on the University of North Dakota's (UND) Citation aircraft.

ISS LIS Near Real-Time Data

The ISS Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) is a space-based lightning sensor aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The ISS LIS instrument records the time of occurrence of a lightning event, measures the radiant energy and estimates the location during both day and night conditions with high detection efficiency. This image shows global lightning strikes from 2017 to 2023.

Aircraft Used to Collect Data

The DC-8 flies three primary missions - sensor development, satellite sensor verification, and basic research studies of the Earth's surface and atmosphere. The ER-2 Earth resources is a high-altitude aircraft that is used to collect information about our surroundings, including Earth resources, celestial observations, atmospheric chemistry and dynamics, and oceanic processes. Lastly, the Global Hawk is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) configured with in situ and remote sensing instruments for use in high-altitude, long-duration Earth science missions.

LANCE AMSR2 Ocean Data

The GCOM-W1 NRT AMSR2 Unified L2B Global Swath Ocean Products is a swath product containing global sea surface temperature over ocean, wind speed over ocean, water vapor over ocean and cloud liquid water over ocean, using resampled NRT Level-1R data provided by JAXA.

LANCE AMSR2 Rain Data

The GCOM-W1 NRT AMSR2 Unified Global Swath Surface Precipitation GSFC Profiling Algorithm is a swath product containing global rain rate and type, calculated by the GPROF 2017 V2R rainfall retrieval algorithm using resampled NRT Level-1R data provided by JAXA.

LANCE AMSR2 Soil Moisture Data

The GCOM-W1 AMSR2 Unified Level-2B Half-Orbit 25 km EASE-Grid Surface Soil Moisture product is a daily measurement of surface soil moisture produced by two retrieval algorithms, (Normalized Polarization Difference (NPD) algorithm developed by JPL and the Single Channel Algorithm (SCA) developed by USDA), using resampled NRT Level-1R data provided by JAXA.

GOES-R PLT Visualized by the Field Campaign Explorer

The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R Post Launch Test (GOES-R-PLT) field campaign was a collaborative mission to validate the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) instruments aboard the GOES-R, now GOES-16, satellite.

The OLYMPEX GPM-GV Field Campaign

Major ground-based and airborne observations for the Olympic Mountain Experiment (OLYMPEX) Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Ground Validation (GV) field campaign took place between November, 2015 and January, 2016, with additional ground sampling continuing through February on the Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

The INCUS Field Campaign

The INvestigation of Convective UpdraftS (INCUS) mission is needed to provide the first tropics-wide investigation of the evolution of the vertical transport of air and water by convective storms, which will bridge the gap and enhance our understanding of the important parts of our atmosphere.

The HS3 Field Campaign

The Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) was a NASA airborne field campaign focused on better understanding the physical processes that control hurricane intensity change. The primary aircraft used in the campaign were two high altitude, long-duration flight unmanned airborne systems (UAS). Each Global Hawk UAS was outfitted with instruments capable of measuring various storm and environmental parameters.

The CPEX Field Campaigns

The Convective Processes Experiment – Aerosols & Winds (CPEX-AW) campaign is a joint effort between the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) with the primary goal of conducting a post-launch calibration and validation activities of the Atmospheric Dynamics Mission-Aeolus (ADM-AEOLUS) Earth observation wind Lidar satellite in Sal, Cabo Verde. CPEX-AW is a follow-on to the Convective Processes Experiment (CPEX) field campaign which took place in the summer of 2017.

The ALOFT Field Campaign

The Airborne Lightning Observatory for the Fly's Eye Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) Simulator (FEGS) and Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes(TGFs) (ALOFT) campaign is a unique suborbital campaign to advance the science of high-energy radiation emissions from thunderstorms, validate existing spaceborne lightning mappers and evaluate design concepts for next-generation mappers, and study convection from a suborbital platform.

Within this broad mandate, GHRC will focus on lightning, tropical cyclones and storm-induced hazards through integrated collections of satellite, airborne, and in-situ data sets.
