Dr. Gagan Matta
Dr. Gagan Matta Completed his Master’s and Ph.D. in Environmental Science from Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar, India in 2009. Theme covered during the Ph.D. is phytoplankton ecology and water quality modeling/indexing of River Ganga System.
Since then continuously working on various aspects of water quality of different freshwater resources like River Ganga System, River Yamuna System and other static and dynamic aquatic systems in Himalayan state of Uttarakhand. In 2011, Jointed Department of Zoology and Environmental Science, Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar as Assistant Professor and presently as Senior Assistant Professor. While extending the work, in 2012, started in the fields of groundwater monitoring, Toxicological assessment and science communication along with surface water monitoring. While visiting more than 12 countries for various academic and research assignments, accepted as members of various academic bodies, like Royal Society of Chemistry of London and International Water Association. For contribution in science for society, Dr. Matta is Recipient of many prestigious awards from various national and international agencies, while accepted as member of BRICS Youth summit in CHINA in 2017. With Publishing 70 research papers in International Journals and 24 edited/authored books continuously working betterment of environment and conservation. While completing 4 major projects from various finding agencies, guided more than 25 master students and currently 4 Ph.D. students are registered under supervision.
Currently, focusing on various aspects of surface and ground water quality monitoring, quality indexing, science communication, green auditing and toxicological assessment.

of various scared and adventures spots. The present study refers to the assessment of groundwater quality of five different sites demarcated in Haridwar district. Water samples were collected for three consecutive years (2017–2019) to test physicochemical parameters for tap water and hand pump water in the vicinity of a national park. The water quality index (WQI) was proposed on huge data set for the evaluation of
quality status. The yearly index value was found 3.69, 3.72 and 4.32 respectively whereas, for all five sites index values were 3.62, 4.38, 4.24, 3.99 and 3.47 respectively, which indicated the groundwater quality was in very good condition (as WQI < 25). The observed values of major parameters were recorded under the permissible limits of governmental agencies, except the alkalinity (>200 mg/L) and hardness (200 mg/L). Therefore, it is suggested that the groundwater quality should be regularly monitored so that the risk of any contamination can be detected and treated before drinking and irrigation purposes.

rural area of Haridwar district was studied. The samples were collected from five different rural
areas and analysed with respect of physico-chemical parameters. The quality parameters were
compared with standard permissible limits for drinking water proposed by national and
international government bodies. The results showed that all the water quality parameters were
below the permissible limits at most of the sampling stations. Only the Ca and Mg hardness were
reported higher in concentration at three different sampling location. Risk assessment in respect
of Ca and Mg contents at some groundwater sources indicated that these hand pump water can be
consumed safely by human.
