Payson Ranger District firefighters first responded the evening of Saturday, Dec. 14 as the fire burned from the Tonto and spread onto the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest.

Fuels Involved

Burning in timber and chaparral. Area fuels are abnormally dry due to La Nina conditions coupled with the southerly aspect of the fire
area.

Significant Events

Moderate, Creeping, Flanking, Short-range Spotting with 3-5 foot flame lengths.

Outlook
Planned Actions

Hold the fire west of FS Road 76, north of the Highline Trail and FS Road 76K, and east of Horton Trail. Continue monitoring fire's eastern spread and prepping proposed control lines and infrastructure.

Projected Incident Activity

12 hours: Fire will continue minimal growth in east Horton drainage. Crews will fire where needed on the FS Road 76 to stay even with the fire edge. 

24 hours: Fire as needed along FS Road 76 to stay even with the fire edge. Crews will prep along Highway 260 corridor, construct handline in fuel break along Christopher Creek, and continue structure triage to protect values at risk. 

48 hours: Fire as needed along FS Road 76 to stay even with the fire edge. Crews will prep along Highway 260 corridor, construct handline in fuel break along Christopher Creek, and continue structure triage to protect values at risk.

Remarks

Tonto Creek Fish Hatchery, Tonto Creek Estates, and Zane Grey Cabins have been placed in SET.
