The Pali words uppāda and vaya are usually misinterpreted to mean “rising/falling” or “increasing... more The Pali words uppāda and vaya are usually misinterpreted to mean “rising/falling” or “increasing/decreasing in presence”. This article shows how these words, together with their various synonyms (samudaya, udaya, nirodha, atthaṅgama) should be understood to mean “appearance/disappearance”. The formula “no c’assa no ca me siyā; na bhavissati na ca me bhavissati” is shown to be a description of how uppāda and vaya are to be correctly discerned.
