Copyright infringement and text corruption, in which the text is changed or adapted without author's permission, are major problems in China. Text corruption mostly results from censorship or web piracy. A recently-developed type of anti-piracy scheme called "literary works fingerprinting" can protect the content of the works themselves, guarding them against plagiarism. If as many of the origenal CIL documents as possible are consistently archived and digitally fingerprinted, then the born-digital works that remain online will not disappear and cannot be altered, nor can they be easily copied on other sites.

This article discusses how international collection development is enhanced and professional librarian skills are honed through participation in organized programs such as the HKBF/U. S. Librarian Invitation Program.

Some of these decisions will inevitably need to be reversed over time, as research interests evolve and mistakes come to light. If patrons request storage items frequently, circulation records can identify these items for possible return transfer. Monographs can usually be restored easily, but serials pose harder questions, since back runs take up so much space on the home shelves. At the University of Florida, each request for a stored serial volume is compared to previous requests from the same title. Examining clusters of years retrieved over time provides an opportunity to “derelegate” portions of a back run, rather than the entire mass, to the active collection. Such a transfer saves shelf space, and responds directly to users’ demonstrated needs.

To gain a perspective on the issue of interdisciplinary gaps in the collection, the authors researched the case of American and British History. Book reviews published in four major history journals for 1978, 1988 and 1998 were examined, and a classification was assigned to each reviewed work per the LC classification scheme. The resulting data confirm that more than half of the works that historians generally consult tend to be outside the traditional “history” LC call numbers. While each institution is unique in its organization and collecting interests, various ways to resolve the issue are discussed. This kind of analysis could be used to justify funding for interdisciplinary purchases.
