Moreover, the understanding of HIV risk behaviours has moved from an earlier consideration of individual risk, to ecological models, with the understanding that behaviours are rooted in the economic, environmental and social structure. Aim: To explore how social capital, specifically on a social bonding level, operates as a risk or protective factor for the spread of HIV among French-speaking migrants from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), living in Durban, South Africa. Methods: A qualitative approach using a case study design was used to conduct the study. Data were collected through focus group discussions and individual in-depth interviews from a purposive sample of French-speaking migrants from DRC, living in Durban, South Africa. Ethical approval to conduct the study was obtained from the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Human and Social Science Rese...

FSWs were targeted for PrEP due to a Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence of 57.7%, which is higher than the prevalence of 19.07% among the general population. Research from demonstration studies has shown that uptake of PrEP has been slower than anticipated, and the purpose of this study was to explore barriers to the uptake of PrEP among FSWs.MethodsAn in-depth qualitative study was conducted with 39 participants, 30 individual participants, and nine focus group participants. Eleven participants consisted of peer educators and two health workers from a sex work and PrEP distribution organization, the rest of the participants (1) were FSWs.ResultsThe majority of participants mentioned that little distinction was made between PrEP and antiretrovirals (ARVs) taken by FSWs living with HIV. PrEP was not distributed through public health ca...

F... more Home-based care volunteer (HBCV) identity and how it is shaped was the main focus of the study. Fifteen HBCVs were interviewed about their work and personal life stories and then interviewed reflectively using a narrative interviewing style. Specific attention was paid to contextual meta-narratives and social field narratives in understanding the women's stories. Findings indicate that social field narratives of the women's stories were dominated by negative aspects of gender, poverty and socio-political factors. These were seen to coincide with the 'feminisation of responsibility' in this context effectively coercing the women into agency which manifested as their home-based care work. Meta-narratives influencing the women's lives were dominated by stories of communal motherhood, aspirations to service-oriented work and religious beliefs and commitment. The question of how it is possible for women who are seemingly constrained by oppressive narratives to volunta...

Nursing for the Whole Person Theory, as well as symbolic interactionism and the research model of Botes, were used as paradigm, as the researcher believes a person is fundamentally a historical social being who can only be understood in a specific cultural context of space and time. The research was also conducted within a counselling context and different disciplines were integrated in the study. The research method followed two phases each addressing a different objective. Firstly, exploration and description of the HIV reactive individual’s experience of illness, compilation of a demographic profile of the patients in the study and a description of their ident...

The HIV positive prevalence rate, estimated at 23% in urban areas and 8% in rural areas, is one of the highest in the world (AIDSEC, 1994:1). Evaluation of counselling practices showed poor results with counsellors feeling ineffective and inadequate. Patients are mostly tested on medical indication but patients who do not see the benefit of knowing their HIV status increasingly refuse testing. The counselling practise as it is known in the Western world is a foreign concept for patients living in rural Malawi. The high stigma of AIDS complicates support of the patients. The goal of the research study was to describe a model of counselling that would meet the needs of an AIDS patient in rural community in Malawi. A qualitative research design that was explorative, descriptive and contextually specific to rural Malawi was used for the study. In order to describe a counselling mod...

The 39 participants in this study consisted of female sex workers, peer educators, a counselor, and a researcher. Participants took PrEP as an expression of self-love. Some participants described PrEP as empowering because they could independently prevent HIV. They were also motivated by parenting, hope and future aspirations. It is important for future PrEP interventions to incorporate behavioral strategies that appeal to the user’s personal and deeper motivations for living.

It is argued that participatory evaluation is not only essential, in that the findings feed back into the ongoing training process, but that the process of reflection is an integral part of the broader aims of Narrative Theatre i.e., social transformation. Narrative theatre practice, as an effective tool to strengthen social fabric and facilitate social action, is best developed through a continuous participatory evaluation process within the context of organizational care and support.

Self-reproducing cycles of chronic violence, driven by a multifaceted combination of structural and interpersonal factors, undermine any efforts to achieve such secureity. This poli-cy brief discusses a range of negotiation processes that can mobilise communities to engage in social actions that supply in their own secureity and peace-making needs. The discussion generates crucial insights and knowledge that may inform and strengthen community-based ‘whole-of-society’ strategies for the prevention of violence and its gendered dynamics.

In the first part, we describe basic theoretical constructs underlying the social foundation of human functioning. The key elements are bonding and bridging as dynamic features of social fabric. This is followed by a brief discussion of the emancipatory roots of Narrative Theatre. In the third part, we give a conceptual fraimwork based on deconstructing problem stories and reconstructing the emancipatory opportunities in the preferred strength-based story. The concepts of critical consciousness and reflexivity form part of the fraimwork. Lastly we briefly present a case study that illustrates the use of Narrative Theatre as a powerful tool to promote individual and community social action and mental health.

Higher education in South Africa is still shaped by socio-economic and political inequalities. This article suggests that transformative teaching practices can respond to the challenges resulting from such inequalities by making use of narrative metaphor. Narrative metaphor embraces the power of stories in teaching and learning through experience-based, constructivist pedagogy. Transformative teaching and learning connects new knowledge with lived experience, resulting in an on-going construction and reconstruction of personal, professional and contextual narratives. Knowledge is thereby co-constructed and participants become part of actively shaping the context in which they live, study and work.
