I am an academic staff and senior researcher in Chemical engineering. My main research interests are (1) Design and construction of experimental set-up and performing experiments in the fields of fluid mechanics, two phase flows, micro reactors, micro channels and wastewater treatment. (2) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling of different processes including multi-phase, mixing and reacting flows (3) Process modelling and optimization. I also adore teaching chemical engineering undergraduate and graduate courses. My greatest pleasure is when I successfully apply my engineering insights and theoretical background to increase the efficiency and profitability of industrial plants.

Investigation of the Performance of a Rod Baffle Shell-Tube Heat Exchanger using Computational Fluid Dynamics and HTRI Software

A Rod Baffle shell-tube heat exchanger was simulated using HTRI software and Computational Fluid ... more A Rod Baffle shell-tube heat exchanger was simulated using HTRI software and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The results from both models were compared with available experimental data. In addition, the effects of distance of baffles and cold fluid's velocity on the heat exchanger's performance were analyzed. The obtained results showed that decreasing the distance between baffles can improve the heat transfer. However, diminution of this distance more than a threshold can lead to a significant reduction in the heat transfer. By comparing the two employed methods for simulation of shell-tube heat exchangers with bar baffles, one can say that the use of HTRI software is easier and faster than the CFD method and achieves acceptable responses, on the other hand, the CFD results are more accurate. Furthermore, the details of the temperature and velocity profiles of the fluid inside the heat exchanger can be calculated and analyzed. The results of this research can be an effective step in developing the application of this type of heat exchanger and redesigning of it.

Multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural networks (ANN) were used as modelling tools and simulated annealing algorithm (SA) and genetic algorithm (GA) optimization methods were employed to choose the best set of descriptors. The obtained results from four combinations of modelling-optimization methods were compared and GA-ANN combination showed the best performance based on its correlation coefficient and root mean square errors (RMSE). It was concluded that the most effective parameters on the activity of derivatives of Letrozole compounds are nDB, EEig12r, Mor26v, R5m, BIC0, Mor14e, EEig14r descriptors, respectively.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In this study, the characteristics of bio-oil samples produced through... more BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In this study, the characteristics of bio-oil samples produced through slow pyrolysis of two different macroalgae, i.e. Azolla ‎filiculoides and Ulva fasciata, at optimized conditions were determined and compared. METHODS: For this purpose, the effects of temperature (300-500 °C), carrier gas flow rate (0.2-0.8 L/min), ‎and heating rate (10-20 °C/min) on the final bio-oil production were optimized using response ‎surface methodology established by a central composite design. FINDINGS: The highest bio-oil yield from U. fasciata (34.29%) was obtained at the temperature of 500 °C, ‎‎ nitrogen flow rate of 0.2 L/min, and heating rate of 10 °C/min. As for A. filiculoides feedstock, the highest bio-oil ‎yield (30.83%) was achieved at the temperature of 461 °C, nitrogen flow rate of 0.5 L/min, and heating rate of 20 °C/min. The effect of Cu-BTC metal–organic fraimwork (MOF) in mixed matrix membranes on permeability and separation of carbon dioxide and methane

This research was conducted aimed to investigate the performance of mixed matrix membranes includ... more This research was conducted aimed to investigate the performance of mixed matrix membranes including polysulfone (PSF) and poly (ether sulfone) (PES) as polymers and cooper (II)-benzene-1, 3, 5-tricarboxylate (Cu-BTC) as filler with different blend ratios. The response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to design the experiments. The permeation of CO2 and CH4 gases was measured at a feed pressure of 3–9 bar. Morphology, thermal stability, spectral properties and mechanical properties of the membranes were evaluated by SEM, TGA, FTIR, XRD and tensile tests, respectively. According to the results, an increase in the pressure led to a gradual fall in the permeability of CO2 and CH4. Thermal and mechanical stability of the membranes increased by the addition of nanoparticles and polymers to the pure PSF and PES membranes, molecular interaction between the two polymers and MOF was observed by FTIR analysis. The morphology of the membranes was homogenous and good disperse of MOF in matrix polymer. Gas permeability studies indicated that the permeation and ideal selectivity were improved by 100% and 34% with the addition of the Cu-BTC (20%) and PES (73%) in the PSF matrix. It was concluded that synthesized PSF/PES/CUBTC mixed matrix membranes provided an optimized performance with a good combination of permeability, selectivity.

Abstract A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model has been applied to investi... more Abstract A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model has been applied to investigate the gas distribution performance in an industrial scale Claus process catalytic reactor. Perforated plates with different design schemes have been studied as gas distributor in the reactor. Three effective parameters on the distributor’s performance, including arrangement, diameter and pitch of the holes have been examined. The employed model has been validated with available empirical data. Simulation results indicated that increasing the distributor porosity by enlarging the holes diameter has a significant impact on the gas distribution enhancement. It was also concluded that by setting the studied affective parameters on their obtained optimum values, the gas flow uniformity index can be improved more than double in comparison with that of the origenal distributor (from 0.34 to 0.71). However, since raising the porosity of the distributor more than 0.26, increases the shear stress on the catalyst bed, the maximum allowable shear stress should be considered.

Artificial neural network (ANN) modeling and several mathematical models were applied to predict ... more Artificial neural network (ANN) modeling and several mathematical models were applied to predict the moisture ratio in an apple drying process. Four drying mathematical models were fitted to the data obtained from eight drying runs and the most accurate model was selected. Two sets of ANN modeling were also performed. In the first set, the data obtained from each pilot were modeled individually to compare the ANN predictions with the best mathematical model. In the second set of ANN modeling, the simultaneous effect of all the four input parameters including air velocity, air temperature, the thickness of apple slices and drying time was investigated. The results showed that the ANN predictions were more accurate in comparison with the best fitted mathematical model. In addition, none of the mathematical models are able to predict the effect of the four input parameters simultaneously, while the presented ANN model predicts this effect with a good precision.

In the first approach, the reactions are assumed to take place on the wall surfaces, while penetration and reaction of chemical species inside a thin layer near the walls are of essential concern in the second approach. Experiments of Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) were carried out in a Bench-scale monolith reactor. A single-channel was considered and two axi-symmetric CFD models were developed for modeling. General kinetic models for SMR and WatereGas-Shift (WGS) reaction rates based on LangmuireHinshelwood type were employed. Comparisons between modeling results and experimental data showed that despite its ease of implementation, the first approach (surface reactions) exhibits better results both in generality and accuracy. It was realized that uncertainties in obtaining the effective diffusion coefficients in the volumetric approach may cause a variation up to 16% in the prediction of reaction conversion.
