Its proclivity for rapid transmission and relatively high fatality rate across global regions prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to proclaim it a global pandemic. This study is aimed at determining the prevalence, and factors associated with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection among students in private universities in Rivers State. Design: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study Aims: To determine the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and its associated factors among private university students. Materials and Methods: 431 participants were tested for SARS CoV-2 using GeneXpert Dx System's reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Self-administered questionnaires were also distributed to elicit responses from these participants. Descriptive statistics (percentages and proportions) were used to report findings. Results: A response rate of ...

These TMs are freely used without mandatory safety or toxicological evaluation. Thus, it is necessary to identify plants with toxicity potentials among the plants used for therapeutic purposes in the country. This study investigated effect of ethanolic leaf extract of Macaranga spinosa Muell-Arg on selected biomarkers of toxicity in Wistar rats. Fifteen Wistar rats of both sexes weighing 96.8 -250 g were divided into three groups comprising of group 1 (control 0.5ml distilled water); group 2 (500 mg/kg b.w Macaranga spinosa Muell-Arg leaf extract) and group 3 (1000 mg/kg b.w Macaranga spinosa Muell-Arg leaf extract). At the end of one week oral administration, animals were sacrificed; blood and tissues samples were taken for biochemical and histopatological investigations respectively. Phytochemicals present w...

Twenty-five (25) rats of both sexes (weighing 50-114 g) were divided into 5 groups, comprising of control (0.5mL water), N-hexane only (0.5mL), RD(50% vol/vol) + N-hexane, RD(25% vol/vol) + N-hexane, and RD (12.5% vol/vol) + N-hexane, also labelled as groups 1-5 respectively. After 2 weeks of oral daily administration, the animals were sacrificed; blood, liver, kidney, and heart tissues were taken for biochemical and histopathological investigations. A non-significant decreased (p≥0.05) in plasma concentration of total protein, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in groups 3-5, a significant decrease (p≤0.05) in albumin (groups 3-5); a non-significant increased in creatinine, gamma glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) in groups 3-4 was observed, as compared with the control group; Moreov...

The widespread dissatisfaction coupled with high staff turnover has necessitated a study of this nature. Due to the broad nature of this topic, this study focused specifically on company factors with the intention of determining which of these factors, if at all, were primarily responsible for the dissatisfaction that was prevalent. Company factors, upon which the study was based, were identified to try to assist management understand the full extent of the dissatisfaction. The intention was to identify the specific company factors that were contributing to the dissatisfaction in order to help curb the high level of staff turnover within the company. The study was conducted as staff were leaving at an alarming rate without the necessary steps being taken to address the problem. The methodology that was used was to send out a questionnaire to a broad section of the staff where the company factors w...

These plants are widely utilized in Nigerian traditional system of medicine for the treatment of countless of illnesses. This paper focused on the phytochemical and essential composition of the aerial parts of Leonurus cardiaca. The phytochemical and essential oil screening and characterization were carried out using high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. Results obtained from this investigation showed seven different terpenoids and their total concentrations were 26.19 x 10-1 (mg/100 g), nine different phenolic acids (506.33 mg/100 g), twelve different saponin (62.33 mg/100 g), seven different cyanogenic glycosides (118.03 mg/100 g), thirteen different glycosides (16.17 mg/100 g), five (5) different anthocyanins (56.53 mg/100 g), twenty six different alkaloids (1.31 mg/100 g), six different flavonoids (7.31 mg/100 g), seven different sterol (5.91 mg/100 g), tannins (426.49 mg/100 g), an...

Sixty male wistar albino rats weighing between 180 and 220g were used for this study. The rats were grouped into 12 groups, five rats per group. Group 1 served as normal control, group 2 received 5mg/kg weight of cisplatin, serving as negative control while group 3 received 5mg/kg b.w of cisplatin and treated with 25mg/kg weight of hydrochlorothiazide and served as positive control. Group 4-12 rats were cisplatin-induced cardiovascular damage treated with Leonurus cardiaca extract at 166, 250, and 500mg/kg for 7, 14, and 21 days. Biochemical assays were determined using standard methods and procedures. The Na+, Cl-, HCO3-, creatinine, and urea levels of kidney homogenate of group 7 treated rats with the extract at 250mg/kg b.w for 7 days were 123.05±0.01mmol/l, 1.07±0.01mmol/l, 27.27±0.01mmol/l, 13.63±0.01mmol/l, 0.68±0.0...
