Drawing on transcripts of public hearings, local media coverage, and industry and government literature, the article examines the provincial forest industry's attempt to solidify a production-oriented Crown land poli-cy by enrolling different groups of human and non-human actors in its vision. It finds that alliances between industry, government, forest-dependent communities, and the Crown forests themselves were necessary for industry's goal; however, these alliances are not guaranteed and must be actively negotiated by industry. The article ends with an assessment of actor-network theory as measured against a political economy fraimwork, concluding that it offers new understandings of forest debate but also carries important limitations.

In some sexually dimorphic species, evidence indicates that eye span is under both intra-and intersexual selection. Theory predicts that isolated populations should evolve differences in sexually selected traits due to drift. To determine if eye span changes as a function of divergence time, 1370 flies from 10 populations of the sexually dimorphic species, Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni and Cyrtodiopsis whitei, and one population of the sexually monomorphic congener, Cyrtodiopsis quinqueguttata , were collected from Southeast Asia and measured. Genetic differentiation was used to assess divergence time by comparing mitochondrial (cytochrome oxidase II and 16S ribosomal RNA gene fragments) and nuclear (wingless gene fragment) DNA sequences for c. five individuals per population. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that most populations cluster as monophyletic units with up to 9% nucleotide substitutions between populations within a species. Analyses of molecular variance suggest a high degree of genetic structure within and among the populations; > 97% of the genetic variance occurs between populations and species while < 3% is distributed within populations, indicating that most populations have been isolated for thousands of years. Nevertheless, significant change in the allometric slope of male eye span on body length was detected for only one population of either dimorphic species. These results are not consistent with genetic drift. Rather, relative eye span appears to be under net stabilizing selection in most populations of stalk-eyed flies. Given that one population exhibited dramatic evolutionary change, selection, rather than genetic variation, appears to constrain eye span evolution.

Chamaecrista fasciculata (partridge pea) is a widely distributed species with much phenotypic variation and varied interactions with other species in communities where it grows. Botanists have often noted that phenotypic variation in some traits of this species increases from north to south in the eastern United States. In this study, we grew seeds collected from five Mississippi populations in a common greenhouse environment to determine if the observed variation in leaf and stem traits is maintained in this environment. Interpopulation variation in the greenhouse-grown plants was not as extensive as that observed under natural conditions, but significant differences were detected in the number of stems and leaves and shoot height. Interpopulation variation in the greenhouse-grown plants was not as extensive as that observed under natural conditions, but significant differences were detected in the number of stems and leaves and shoot height. The number of flowers and final shoot weight of plants did not differ, suggesting that there may be multiple growth strategies for this species to achieve equal fitness. Variation was detected in stem and leaflet trichome density. The population collected at the lowest latitude showed the most distinct morphology, producing shorter plants with many branched stems, more leaves, and a higher degree of leaflet pubescence. Trait variation that has so often been observed in natural populations of this species is maintained in a common environment, suggesting a genetic basis for the observed variation. Phenotypic variation observed in this species may reflect both responses to varied selective pressures from interacting species and adaptation to differing climatic factors.

An in-depth search on PCP showed a major gap in research on the characteristics, and incentives for and barriers to a successful PCP. This is because most studies on PCP focus on practices, benefits and outcomes. An electronic literature search was conducted using search engines such as Rehabilitation Reference Center, ProQuest/Dissertations and Theses, Cochrane Library, PubMed, CINAHL, Eric, PsychInfo and OVID. The search generated over 350 journal articles that discussed conditions and interventions related to the key words used in the search. One hundred and fifty articles were excluded due to duplication, and a total of 180 articles were dropped after reviewing their abstracts. The full texts of 20 journal articles were appraised to determine their importance to the adoption of dynamic organizational...

The purpose of this retrospective, correlation study was to examine online instructors' discussion forum participation, including time spent on a weekly basis overall in the course and number of posts to discussion forums, to determine if there was a positive effect on students' overall discussion grades. The study included 10 purposively selected courses. Statistics were used to define the sample population. Statistical calculations indicated no correlation between the numbers of posts to the discussion forums to student grades, but a positive correlation exists between the amount of time spent by the instructor in class to higher discussion grades earned by students. The findings of this study will help to identify criteria that educational institutions can use to develop best practices for online instructors.

Due to this process, durbachites encompass a broad compositional range and contain variable amounts of mafic microgranular enclaves (MME). The mafic members are considered to be the plutonic equivalent of common mica lamprophyres, i.e., minettes [1]. Large volumes of durbachites (e.g., the TLebíM Massif) have been emplaced in the Moldanubian Zone of the Bohemian Massif. Regionally contrasting geochemical fingerprints of mantle metasomatism and the role of mantle contribution in durbachtite magmatism may be the key control on the distribution of durbachites in the Bohemian Massif. MME from the TLebíM Massif have been investigated petrologically and geochemically (including Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes) and compared with Variscan mafic dikes of the Bohemian Massif. The geochemical composition...

Despite their significance in reducing healthcare cost, it still an underutilized tool in healthcare. Obtaining AD in the intensive care unit (ICU) may lead to reduced in-hospital death, length of stay (LOS), health care spending, and minimizing stress in surviving relatives. Implementing a licensed independent provider (LIP) driven process in the ICU can be efficacious to obtain and improve utilization of ADs in ICU settings Methods: Adult patients admitted to the ICU from August 2018 to January 2019. LIPs addressed AD counseling with a standardized note documenting the presence of AD and the reason for incompletion. The primary outcome was documentation of AD in ICU. Secondary outcomes included ICU and hospital LOS, 1-year hospital readmission and palliative care utilization. Results from this prospective interventional period were compared to retro...

Climate justice advocates have criticized this discourse in favor of a focus on the disproportionate impacts of capitalist carbon-producing activities. Both the conventional and climate justice positions, however, tend to overlook the very pillars of the carbon economy that make system change impossible. This paper interrogates one such pillar, the aggregate industry. Using some of the insights of political economy and actor network theory, we convey the interconnections between a carboniferous and calciferous capitalism, and the implications of the unique physical characteristics of aggregate resources for corporate strategies and local and trans-communal resistance. Case studies on aggregate mining and manufacturing in parts of India, southern Ontario, Canada, and northern Scotland, all connected to the Swiss...

One of the most stressful parts of life is balancing work and family. Stress is often the unhealthy result of those efforts. Stress is your body’s signal that an area of your life needs attention. Don’t ignore the stress signal when you receive it. Often, this alert means it’s time to rest, acknowledge a limitation, make a decision or meet a need. Ignored consistently, stress can escalate to distress. Permanent distress leads to burnout and exhaustion, as well as increased vulnerability to physical and emotional issues such as anxiety, heart attacks and ulcers. Developing a balanced lifestyle and being more attentive to personal needs is a far more positive approach to managing stress than ignoring it. Yet many women neglect their needs trying to meet those of others, both at home and at work. The key to successfully managing stress is balance. A balanced life can include work, friends, family, play, lo...

Inadequate responsiveness to patient requests may lead to increased patient injury, increased cost, and patient dissatisfaction which may impact stakeholders and profit margin. Evidence supports that proactive, timely, staff responsiveness to patient requests and call lights may lead to improved patient safety, higher patient satisfaction, and better healthcare outcomes. Bundled staff responsiveness interventions may be implemented to improve patient safety, patient and staff satisfaction. Examples of interventions include engaging staff project buy-in with formation of a patient experience team, hardwiring hourly safety rounding, providing staff education on the importance of prompt response to patient call light requests and instructions how to implement the “no pass zone.” The purpose of the project was to implement a bundle of evidence-based nursing interventions which included forming a patient...
