CURRICULUM VITAE
Sotirios S. Livas was born in Athens on 31st December, 1964. He lives in Athens.
Marital status: Married, two children.
Academic Credentials: Bachelor in Law (Athens University – Law School), Master in International Cooperation Law (Brussels University - Jean Monnet Chair), PhD in International Relations with specialization in the area of the Middle East (Corfu Ionian University).
Current Status: Professor at Corfu Ionian University – School of Humanities - Department of Translation, Interpretation and Foreign Languages.
Scientific work: Sotirios S. Livas has been a member of the teaching staff of the same University since 2001. Since 2020, he is Professor of International Law, International Relations and Society and Politics in the Middle East. He also teaches at the University’s post graduate programs the subject matters of legal translation and political discourse analysis. He has written extensively on the geopolitics of the Middle East, Islam and western notions of democracy, Islamic extremism, immigration and Turkey’s place in the Middle Eastern geopolitical context. He is frequent contributor and book reviewer to international journals, such as the Turkish Review and the Journal of Oriental and African Affairs. He has contributed with a chapter (Xenophobia, Alienation, Heterotopias and Cultural Limits: Fictional Boundaries of the Athens Pakistani and Afghani Communities) to Annmarie Profanter – Francis Owtram’s Citizenship in Transition (Cambridge Scholars, 2013). He has taken part in international conferences about Islam and democracy and about Islamic political and religious networks. He is a member of scholars’ networks and laboratories about immigration currents (Mobilities, Laboratory of Language and Politics) and the relation between language and politics (Eurolect Observatory). His book (“Globalization, Nationalism and Islam – Fethullah Güllen’s Discourse and Work in Turkey and the world” (in Greek, Papazisis Publishing House) was a treatise on Fethullah Güllen’s ideas and network. He has also written two books on the Middle East and Turkey that have been published on December 2016, one book (with Maria Tsingou) about the European Charter on Minority Languages and one book about hate speech and radicalisation.
