Helping Federal Hydrogen Rules Work
January 10, 2025
The US government recently released final rules governing use of a tax credit intended to spur production of “clean” hydrogen to displace fossil fuels, the AP reports. It’s a long-touted idea. In Issues, Valerie J. Karplus and M. Granger Morgan describe the technological, political, and social steps needed to move past the hype and make hydrogen an important part of a climate-friendly energy system. The key, they write, will be capturing hydrogen’s potential advantages—as a fuel, energy carrier, energy storage medium, and raw industrial material—while also implementing policies to make emitting atmosphere-warming greenhouse gases more expensive.
