letter from the maestro
“THE 2018/19 SEASON is highlighted
with bold new voices, including works by three female composers, emerging artists, and repertoire to engage the community at every level. Highlights including a semi-staged production of Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti, and a collaboration with regional college choirs to take on Verdi’s massive and moving Requiem, and a finale concert for the ages, Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert featuring the complete film on a giant screen while LexPhil performs John Williams’ timeless score. We have grown tremendously in the last decade, as an ensemble, a city, and local arts culture. It has been some of the most rewarding work one could hope to do. I’ve programmed a season that includes many of my personal favorite orchestral works, and many I have wanted to program for years. We invite you to celebrate with us this season, as we present music that showcases how far we have come and our bright future ahead.”

A DECADE TO CELEBRATE
A DECADE TO c e l e b r a t e
In April 2009, Maestro Terrell was named Music Director and Conductor of the Lexington Philharmonic, and in the ten years since, we’ve accomplished some pretty amazing things! From new works and expanded community education, to becoming part of the national conversation, check out some of the highlights of the past decade with the Lexington Philharmonic.
ARTS IN HEALTHCARE LexPhil receives generous
WORLD PREMIERES In 2012, with generous support
support from UK HealthCare to bring world-class artists to Lexington for performance and outreach as part of the UK Arts in HealthCare program. UK HealthCare Artists have included Midori, Time for Three, Johannes Moser, Inon Barnatan, Conrad Tao, and most recently, Canadian Brass.
from Dr. Ronald Saykaly, LexPhil launched the Saykaly-Garbulinska Composer-In-Residence Program to commission new works by emerging composers on a bi-annual basis. Since 2012, LexPhil has premiered four new works by composers Daniel Kellogg, Adam Schoenberg, Avner Dorman, and Chris Brubeck.
ARTISTIC COLLABORATIONS Throughout his tenure,
Maestro Terrell has programmed choral works which unite the rich talent at choral programs at universities throughout the Bluegrass Region, giving students some of their first professional performance experiences. Large scale choral collaborations have included Orff’s Carmina Burana and Mahler’s Second Symphony. LexPhil presents Verdi’s Requiem in March 2019.

1 2 MUSIC BUILDS EDUCATION
LexPhil impacts over 20,000 young people in the Bluegrass Region each year! At LexPhil’s annual Music Builds Discovery! concerts, nearly 2,000 central Kentucky students experience live orchestral music for the first time. In 2013, LexPhil launched the Music Builds Education program, a ‘STEM to STEAM’ based platform which integrates music education into the core curriculum standards. In the last five years, LexPhil has exponentially increased the number of partner schools, Teaching Artist visits, and Instrument Petting Zoos presented in the community.
4 SEMI-STAGED OPERAS & MULTIMEDIA WORKS
LexPhil’s presentations of ambitious semi-staged operas, including Piazzolla’s Maria de Buenos Aries and Golijov’s Ainadamar - Fountain of Tears, and multimedia projects such as films with live score (The Gold Rush, Raiders of the Lost Arc), Holst’s The Planets in HD and Philip Glass’ Icarus at the Edge of Time have become hallmarks of LexPhil’s programming, and community favorites.
THE NATIONAL STAGE
In November 2016, LexPhil debuted on the classical music radio program Performance Today. The broadcast featured the April 2014 world premiere performance of 2013-14 Composer-in-Residence Adam Schoenberg’s “Canto.” The popular classical music program airs on 300 stations across the nation and is heard by 1.4 million listeners a week.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In March 2018, LexPhil commissioned Lexington artist Lennon Michalski to create a work in celebration of the 2018/19 Season, and Maestro’s tenth anniversary as Music Director & Conductor. Lennon strove to “take an aerial view, and examine the color each part brings to the whole, full sound and color of the orchestra.” Check out the painting in person, which will be displayed at select concerts this season!
