Dear Friends of the Lexington Philharmonic,

It is with the utmost excitement that I am becoming the fifth Music Director of the Lexington Philharmonic! As we look forward to our 62nd Season, I feel very humbled to be the first woman holding this position.

When I came to Lexington in May 2022 to replace one of the finalists, none of us (me included) were thinking of myself as a finalist. From the first rehearsal for the May concert until the performance, I felt an immediate connection between the orchestra and myself. How everything clicked and aligned was fortuitous, and so incredibly exciting. It is a week I will remember for the rest of my life, a dream coming true that does not happen often. Please forgive the romanticism (I was born in Paris, France, after all), but it simply made sense that my next steps had to be together with you!

I decided to become an orchestral conductor when I was a teenager because I dreamed of sharing my passion for music with everyone. As your new Music Director, I would like to encourage you to talk to me and share your story with me, be it after a concert or when running into me in town. I would also like to invite you to share your love of classical music with your friends and families, to bring them with you to concerts, and to support the Lexington Philharmonic.

We have all been dealing with multiple crises over the past couple of years (not the least of which has been a worldwide pandemic), and studies show that classical music has the power to relieve anxiety, improve our memory, strengthen social relationships, and boost our brain power and productivity. As a team, let’s make a difference for our community!

Back for the second year, explore the beautiful grounds of Frankfort, KY’s Josephine Sculpture Park in an immersive evening of music, art, and nature at Symphonic Stroll. Paired with sculptures throughout the park, LexPhil musicians will perform a range of chamber music continually from 4PM-8PM. This all-ages inclusive event will feature live music, interactive activities, and local food trucks.

Choose between two entry times, 4PM and 5PM, and then explore at your own pace. Event ends at 8PM.

In partnership with Lexington Historian, Yvonne Giles, LexPhil presents Legacy - The Perry Family, a free, outdoor chamber concert at the historic African Cemetery No. 2. Guest vocalists, Alicia Helm McCorvey and Whit Whitaker, will join a quartet of LexPhil musicians for this program featuring vocal and instrumental chamber works by composers Julia Perry and Florence Price, interwoven with narration about the life and legacy of the Perry family. African Cemetery No. 2 is the resting place of many notable members of Lexington’s African American community, including

the grandparents of Julia Perry. This valued partnership between LexPhil, African Cemetery No. 2, and Yvonne Giles hopes to continue to share the meaningful stories of the Perry family and Lexington citizens.

In the first full-orchestra performance led by Music Director Mélisse Brunet, LexPhil takes the stage at the Singletary Center for the Arts in a program celebrating the unbounded potential in all of us with Limitless. The evening opens with Gabriela Lena Frank’s Three Latin American Dances, inspired by the many musical traditions born of diverse Latin American cultures. Violinist Simone Porter returns as guest artist for the lyrical Barber Violin Concerto. Closing the program is Aaron Copland’s expansive Simone Porter

Symphony No. 3, with its famous quotation of his Fanfare for the Common Man, exhibiting his abstract voice and accessible beauty to create a score that is, in his words, “a serious statement.”

LexPhil and The Lexington Singers return to the beautiful Cathedral of Christ the King for this Lexington holiday tradition in a program of sacred and seasonal orchestral and choral works.

Continuous Variation, at the Singletary Center for the Arts, derives its name from a technique used by composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich in her Symphony No. 1, a work which demonstrates the potential of a handful of ideas to develop into new material. This piece was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1983, making Zwilich the first female composer to receive this esteemed prize. The Power of Influence at the Lyric Theatre & Cultural Arts Center explores how artists are affected by external sources. With works by Mozart, Joseph Bologne - Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Igor Stravinsky and Lexington-born composer Shawn Okpebholo, each piece is in a direct dialogue with influences from the past and present. Composer Shawn Okpebholo joins LexPhil for the performance.

Music-making events for all ages!

Through collaborative activities designed for people of all ages and types of musical abilities, we’re creating space for learning, joy, and community building through music making events in partnership with organizations throughout Lexington and beyond.

LexPhil partners with K12 schools and educators throughout central Kentucky to provide enriching in-school programs that promote and support students as makers of art, meaning, and knowledge.

LexPhil is excited to announce the creation of the Youth Advisory Committee to help shape future LexPhil programs.

LexPhil offers the community an opportunity to attend and watch select dress rehearsals. Individuals under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to attend.

An exciting new initiative this season is work with LFUCG’s Department of Aging and Disability Services to implement creative aging programs around Lexington.

LexPhil is proud to offer $11 tickets for students with valid ID and youth 17 & under to most performances.

LexPhil is a proud affiliate of The Arts Education Partnership (AEP), a national network of more than 100 organizations dedicated to advancing arts education.

The Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra Foundation manages the Lexington Philharmonic’s endowment and is governed by an independent Board of Directors. The Lexington Philharmonic receives a distribution from the Foundation each season to help cover expenses associated with its educational and concert programs.

The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, provides operating support to the Lexington Philharmonic with state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
