REAL-TIME RESPONSE FOR JUSTICE When Columbian-American artist, Paola Mendoza, created her I AM A CHILD series in protest of sending immigrant children to detainment centers, she was intentional about using the Sanitation Workers Strike of 1965 as an inspiration. After a digital connection to Mendoza and project photographer, Kisha Bari, rather than use the photos as a classroom tool, the NCRM team created a rapid response exhibit. Rapid responses address immediate issues and seek to spark thought regarding civil and human rights in real-time. I AM a CHILD opened on July 26, the national day of action for children and was one of the the year's most impactful exhibits. Mendoza and Bari, in partnership with Families Belong Together, later staged a photo shoot at the Museum with local children, National Civil Rights Museum staff and descendants of 1965 sanitation workers.

We were surpr sed at how open people were to the conversation. Here in the United States, human rights is not a big conversation that we have.

NIGHT AT THE LORRAINE "Night at the Lorraine is an event that allows us to not only just recognize the museum for the assassination of Dr. King, but it provides an opportunity to illuminate what it was to the community overall. The National Civil Rights Museum , in itself, is history. The building is history. You not only get to experience the history of black people in this country from start to finish, but you're actually in the building that was there at that time." Sherita Lee 2019 Night at the Lorraine Event Chair

RUBY BRIDGES READING FESTIVAL "I was really looking for another home for the Ruby Bridges Book Festival. I couldn't ask for a better place for it to be because my work is about children and it's about 'how do we bring our children together?' For this museum, such a holy place for us, to now be able to say, they appreciate the work that you're doing and want you to continue it by partnering with us it's like Dr. King opening up his arms and saying, 'Come in and march with me."'
