1. Reminder of Call for IUGG Nominations, due 30 September

The April, 2002, issue of the IUGG E-Journal included a summary of procedures to submit nominations for a new IUGG Bureau (President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and 3 Members) and Finance Committee (5 members). Instructions for nominations are also posted on the IUGG Web site (http://www.IUGG.org), and have been mailed to all IUGG officers and Adhering Bodies. The new officers will be elected by the IUGG Council at their meeting in Sapporo in 2003.

The deadline for submissions is 30 September, 2002. Please do not delay to submit your nominations. Prof. Dr. Klaus Peter Schwarz, the Chair of the Nominations Committee, is available to answer your specific questions and accept nominations.

2. ICSU Grant for 2003 awarded to IUGG/IAGA

The awards for the ICSU Grants Programme for 2003 have been announced. A proposal submitted by Vladimir Papitashvili, Chair of Division V (Geomagnetic Observatories, Surveys, and Analyses) of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) received $35,000 to pursue "Rescue of Old Analogue Magnetograms by Converting to Digital Images." The proposal was supported by the ICSU Panel on World Data Centers. Congratulations!


3. Registrations and Abstracts for IUGG General Assembly are now being accepted

The 2003 General Assembly web site is now assigning ID numbers and accepting abstracts and travel assistance applications for the Sapporo Assembly. (To reach the web site, visit the IUGG home page at http://www.IUGG.org and click on the General Assembly link.) The registration fee has not yet been determined, but it will be announced soon. Instructions for persons wishing to apply for an ID number by mail or fax are found on page 14 of the General Assembly Second Circular. To receive a copy of the Second Circular, send an e-mail request to iugg_service@jamstec.go.jp, or send a fax to 81 468 67 9315.


4. Committee for Proposals to Revise IUGG Statutes and Bylaws appointed

According to the IUGG Statutes, proposals by Member Countries for a change of any article of the statutes of the Union must reach the Secretary General at least six months before the announced date of the Council Meeting at which it is to be considered. Two-thirds of the Delegates at the Council Meeting must approve any change. The Council Meeting on 4 July, 2003, in Sapporo, Japan, will consider changes to the Statutes and By-laws; therefore, such proposals must be received at the Office of the Secretariat by January 4, 2003. President Masaru Kono has appointed a Committee, chaired by Prof. Uri Shamir, to co-ordinate proposals for changes. 5. IUGG Bureau to meet in Cape Town August 31 - September 1

The IUGG National Committee for South Africa will host the annual meeting of the IUGG Bureau in Cape Town, South Africa, August 30 and 31. Agenda items include reports of activities of the IUGG officers, and discussion of matters arising from ICSU and Inter-Union bodies in preparation for the ICSU General Assembly in September. The Bureau will also prepare draft agendas for the Executive Committee and Council Meetings at the 2003 IUGG General Assembly in Sapporo. On September 2, the Bureau members will meeting with Dr. A.F. Spilhaus, Jr., Chair of the IUGG Finance Committee, and Prof. M. Hamlin to discuss matters of common interest and to provide input regarding the 2003-2007 IUGG Budget.
