Liudmyla Pidkuimukha
I am a Ph.D., Associate Professor at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (Ukraine). In 2016, I was awarded my Ph.D. by the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The main results of my research have already been presented at conferences in Germany, Poland, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Ukraine. I was a visiting scholar at the University of Toronto, Jagiellonian University, Giessen University, European University Viadrina, and Friedrich Schiller University Jena.
In 2017, I became a member of the trilateral partnership – cooperation project between Scholars and Scientists from Ukraine, Russia and Germany funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. by now, I have already published 27 papers and 5 more articles have been accepted for publication. Moreover, I am a reviewer for Cognitive Study Journal which is included in the Scopus database. I am a member of The International Association for the Humanities and a member of the Council of Young Scientists at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. Besides linguistics, I am interested in cultural, historical, military and media studies.

in the hybrid Russian-Ukrainian military conflict in the East of Ukraine (2014–ongoing). The
research material is composed of posters, displayed in Kyiv exhibitions during the period
2014–2015.
I apply a multimodal discourse analysis (MDA) to this research, which enables us to better
understand posters through the interaction among different modalities, whilst also offering a
linguistic perspective to poster appreciation. The purpose of this research is to examine the
functions of posters during the conflict and therefore, to elucidate the different roles they play
in recruitment, the maintenance of troop morale, and the mobilization of society. Additionally, the article also focuses on the visual and verbal aspects in constructing the image of
‘friends’ and ‘foes’.
The results of this research indicated a negative depiction of the „enemies”, that is both
Russian combatants and separatists, and positive images of ‘friends’, and ‘sworn brothers’,
that is, the military forces of Ukraine. Thus, this study helps broaden the linguistic understanding of the military and provides a new perspective enabling us to better understand posters and, hopefully, to improve the reader’s level of poster appreciation.
