ABOUT US
The Kentucky Water Research Institute (KWRI) was founded in 1964 as one of the 54 Water Resources Research Institutes established by the U.S. Congress through the Water Resources Research Act. The institute receives annual base grant funding through the USGS Section 104b funding, which is awarded through a state-competitive process to Kentucky institutions of higher learning and administers the nationally competitive USGS 104g research program. Additionally, KWRI has several extramurally funded research, education, and outreach programs.Â

KWRI Receives ARC Grant to Establish Water Workforce Development Center
The Kentucky Water Research Institute (KWRI) at the University of Kentucky has been awarded a $429,761 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC). This funding will support the creation of the Appalachian Water Infrastructure Workforce Development and Training Center, a new initiative aimed at addressing critical water workforce needs in central Appalachia.
Kentucky Water Research Institute Shines in Recent USGS Evaluation
The Kentucky Water Research Institute has been recognized for its exceptional performance and contribution to water resources research, ensuring its continued eligibility for federal support. This endorsement comes from the Water Resources Research Act Program, managed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), following a comprehensive evaluation covering the fiscal years 2016 to 2020.
