Rocket Launch – The Lawrence Hall of Science

Rocket Launch

Activity

In Rocket Launch, you can design and test your own rocket!

Launch an Air-powered Rocket!

Use several different nose cone or fin designs to change how high your rocket flies. See how air pressure affects the flight. When it’s time for the rocket to land, you can deploy a parachute for a safe return home.

What happens when the air pressure is high? What about when it’s low? Which weather conditions would make a launch difficult?

One of the biggest hurdles of space flight is getting the rocket off the ground, because the thrust to launch the rocket must work against the force of gravity. A force stronger than Earth’s gravity must be exerted on the rocket in order for it to lift off the ground. After the rocket makes it into space, it will orbit another object if it begins falling toward that object.
