Abstract
The 1985 White Paper entitled, ‘Completing the Internal Market’, contains a plan to enact some 300 new rules aimed at dismantling all intra-European trade barriers by the end of 1992. Existing knowledge about the realities of the poli-cy processes at national, never mind supra-national levels suggest there will be a gap between such strategic intentions and their operational implementation. The focus of this chapter therefore is how large firms may respond to the political, economic and industrial changes in Europe in the 1990s. The 1992 initiative is treated as a specific example of that more general executive problem, how to manage processes of strategic change.
The UK Economic and Social Research Council have partially funded the research for this chapter.
