Measurement While Drilling: Data Straight from the Rig

Geotechnical engineers often turn to rock coring during a site investigation to characterize and measure properties of bedrock. In Florida, rock coring is often challenging due to the unique, soft-porous nature of the limestone bedrock and the high degree of variability and weathering found throughout the state. Low core recoveries and poor rock quality designations (RQD) are common, and often an insufficient amount of data is gathered to properly characterize the site for geotechnical design.

Recent findings from the University of Florida and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) indicate that the low recoveries and poor core quality may be attributable to the coring techniques implemented rather than the in-situ conditions of Florida limestone. That’s why they have turned to Measurement While Drilling (MWD), an advanced geotechnical method in exploration (A-GaME) technology that provides continuous, real-time monitoring and recording of data during the drilling process.

FDOT used MWD at a site in Perry, Florida, to better understand the engineering properties of the soil and rock. The strength profile shown below displays the strengths measured using correlations with parameters measured through MWD, and the strengths measured in laboratory core samples collected at the site. The plot shows that both strength profiles are in reasonable agreement over the entire depth range and indicate similar layering. In this case, MWD provided a significant increase in data available for design, filling in gaps in data from traditional rock core samples.

“With MWD, efficient drilling practices can be maintained, and the most accurate geotechnical assessment can be achieved,” says David Horhota, Ph.D., P.E., FDOT. “This builds confidence that the site characterization is accurate and can be relied upon by the design engineer.”
