FROM THE DEAN:
Last month, we welcomed 135 new members into the CI Alumni family at our December commencement. On the undergraduate side, we awarded 100 degrees (45 from COM, 21 from ISC, 16 from JOU, 10 from ICT, and eight from MAS). On the graduate side, we had 28 LIS graduate students, two in the ICT master’s program, one MA grad and four doctoral degrees. A special shout out to members of our faculty who received their Ph.Ds.: Dr. Terrell (Kody) Frey and Dr. Joe Martin.
Our very own Beth Barnes served as Deputy University Orator for the ceremony and many other faculty and staff were on hand support our students as they move on into their next chapter.
From our December 2019 Senior Survey, 50% of graduates are already employed and of those already employed, 86% are employed full time. These grads are headed to companies like Twinspires, Norton Healthcare, State Farm, 21c Museum Hotel, University of Kentucky, UPS, St. Joseph Hospital, Sentinel, Oracle, WTVQ, WUTR and Bluegrass Airport, to name a few. We have prepared them to start their careers as marketing directors, multimedia journalists, sound engineers, systems administrators, library specialists and more.

Meet the CI Ambassadors for 2019-2020
CI Ambassadors help the college with student recruitment, events, thanking donors and greeting visitors. They are selected through a competitive application process and receive a scholarship (thank you, donors!)  to support them in the years they serve. They are supervised by Schyler Simpson our Director of Recruitment and Retention. Recently, with the help of Schyler, Director of Philanthropy Tina Pugel and I hosted this year’s group for an informal dinner to thank them for their service and hear their stories. And what stories they have to tell! They truly are leaders in our college, representing most undergraduate majors and boasting an impressive list of internships, leadership positions and awards. Of course, we ended the night with a group selfie, shown below.
Our 2019-2020 Ambassadors are: Jordan Coquitt (Journalism), Annie Gillenwater (Integrated Strategic Communication), Nya Ulibarri-Griffin (Integrated Strategic Communication), Michaela Haswell (Integrated Strategic Communication), Jazmyn Johnson (Integrated Strategic Communication/Communication), Heather Seaton (Communication), Nikhael Virden (Media Arts and Studies), Sydney Wade (Integrated Strategic Communication/Communication) and Neha Yousuf (Journalism).

CI GOOD NEWS:
Intercollegiate Debate
UK Debate got off to a strong start to the second semester by taking top honors at the three-day Hoosier Invitational. While many of the top teams in the country were featured, the two teams left standing after the semi-finals were both from Kentucky! The team of Genevieve Hackman (senior) and Christopher Eckert (Freshman) were 7-0 and the top seed with impressive wins over Berkeley, Michigan, and Minnesota. The all-freshman team of Alan Ivackovic and Christopher Lucas were 6-1 and the second seed after prelims with some great wins over the likes of Dartmouth and Michigan State. In the elimination rounds both partnerships held serve on their way to a final round close-out. In the final four Hackman and Eckert defeated Dartmouth on a 3-0 decision. Ivackovic and Lucas won a tough 2-1 against a very strong Michigan team. When two teams from the same school meet in the final round, the tournament declares co-champions. It is a rare accomplishment and certainly even more rare with three freshmen. Follow the team here.

Don Helme was awarded as principal investigator a $542,844 subaward under the national HEALing Communities Study to conduct and lead the national evaluation of the HCS Health Communication Campaign. Joining him in this three-year evaluation study is co-investigator Nicky Lewis.

PHILANTHROPY UPDATE:
Teamwork in Philanthropy
I have always said raising funds for any endeavor or nonprofit is a team effort. Any funds I’ve ever raised have been a part of a group endeavor… someone made an introduction, another person provided background and still another provided context to a project or mission. I am always a part of the whole of advancing the mission.

The same is true today. We are working with our CI ambassadors to say thank you to donors. Catherine Hayden is organizing alumni events. Several faculty are providing background information about donors to help me have a better understanding before meeting with a donor. Students are sharing their experiences. Larry Patrick and Jeff Ashley serve as co-chairs for our Philanthropy Council providing leadership to our campaign efforts along with several additional key volunteers.

You are also crucial to our team. You may know a donor or have a story about a student’s success or when a student received financial assistance that furthered their education experience. You are an important part of our fundraising efforts! So, thank you for being a part of our efforts to share success and mission with our donors!

Tina Pugel
Director of Philanthropy
